It's one of the shows I can put on and not pay super close attention to. I never go out of my way to watch it on Sunday. I have like 2-3 episodes sitting on my DVR and have no clue when I will watch.

My contribution: Louis Theroux. Any of his documentary series are amazing but Louis Theroux's Wild Weekends would probably be most appropriate.

Just watched his documentaries on the Miami jails and violence in Philadelphia. Very good. He gets right into the thick of everything and he actually interviewed a drug kingpin face to face in Philly who later ended up going to prison.

Good during early seasons. Quick and striking decline.

dexter had at least 3 elite seasons. just because it sucks now doesn't mean it can't be considered an elite show.

the wire only had 3 elite season. if the wire had 2 more seasons that were garbage would that mean that the wire was not an elite show?

If the Wire had one of the worst seasons of any show ever and 3 or 4 really bad ones like Dexter then yeah it wouldn't be an elite show.

And lol @ the wire having only 3 elite seasons

S 2 and 5 of the wire is still better than almost everything.

lol at the recent dexter trash being in the same universe as the wire's worst season

My wife loves these shows, so I can actually lend some insight. When you see the same story covered on different shows from different networks - and it definitely does happen - the folks being interviewed are usually different. For example, on Dateline you might have the parents, while on 48 Hours it's the best friend. It's news, so any network can cover it, but when it come to who's featured on air that's when you usually see distinctions, since I'm guessing if you participate in (and are paid for) appearing on Dateline then NBC will make you agree not to participate in another show about the same subject matter on a competing network.

Away from home with twelve or so hours to kill.. Need something that will hook me straight away (the wire would be a bad choice for example as its hard/slow to get super into.

One of these:

Spartacus
Mad men
Boardwalk empire
Luck
Veep
Inbetweeners uk.

Some shows i love for reference...

Sopranos, the wire, curb, seinfeld, got, bb, soa, justified etc etc

Oh... Add firefly to the list of shows i could watch.. Not into scifi normally though.

spartacus is great, but first episode is kinda bad, and it might take a bit to get into.

i am now watching season one of mad men, and i don't think it's that good. it's ok.

boardwalk is ok

i liked luck, but i expected it to be much better

rome is fantastic
game of thrones is fantastic
house of cards is good
firefly and orange is the new black are both great, but not sure if you'd like them especially

Thanks.

I began watching orange is the new black.. Really liking it so far.
Watched first episode of mad men and wow is that a good looking show. Also way more entertaining than i expected. I suspect its a show that will grow on me as i watch more like with the wire?

Is spartacus as a whole great? My sister recommended it but also said she could barely get through season two.

season 1 of spartacus is the only season that's really good. the end of season 1 is soooooo good!!

the lead actor had bad cancer and died so they had to replace him. he was only around for season 1

Spartacus is the anti-HIMYM/Dexter in regards to quality turn-around.

1st episode was stupid and badly produced. It got bits and bit better by very small amounts until just about the mid-way point where it started to get pretty damn good. By the last couple of episodes of the season, it was straight up awesome and never stopped until it's series finale.

I'd be surprised if I haven't seen every Dateline and 48 Hours that's been on the air for 1+ years. Adam Leroy Lane was a serial killer who's story was done by Dateline and 48 Hours and I know some of the same people were interviewed. For example Darlen Ewalt's husband and the family that actually captured Lane was on both.

The first three episodes are pretty terrible. Read the spoiler summary below and move on to episode 4, which is where the awesome starts. Once the ball gets rolling, it is an amazing show.

Spoiler:

Taken from Wikipedia

Episode 1:

In the series premiere, in 73 B.C., a nameless Thracian warrior and his fellow fighters align themselves with legate Gaius Claudius Glaber and Rome to protect their homeland. But disenchantment with the Romans soon sets in when their allies' strategies leave their homeland unprotected from Getae marauders. The warrior leads a rebellion of the auxiliary troops against the Roman officers, then deserts to return to his village and his wife. He arrives as the Getae attack and he and his wife manage to escape, only to be captured by Glaber the next day. The warrior's wife, Sura, is forced into slavery and he and the other deserters are shipped to the arena in Capua, to be put to death publicly by gladiators, whereupon he proves his worth by defeating all four opponents, and is given a new name, Spartacus.

Episode 2:

The newly enslaved Thracian warrior Spartacus enters the ludus of Lentulus Batiatus to receive gladiator training and discipline. He soon manages to make an enemy of the undefeated Gallic champion of Capua, Crixus, and the attention of whip-wielding taskmaster Doctore who uses harsh methods to test the new novices. He also meets Varro, a Roman gladiator by bankruptcy, who becomes his friend. Spartacus's new owner, the crafty but cash-strapped Batiatus, makes him an offer; if he cooperates and trains as a prized gladiator, he will use his power to help locate his wife. Consequently Spartacus trains to face the test which determines whether he is fit to be a gladiator, and bests Crixus when the Gaul pauses to gloat. Afterwards, the victorious Spartacus swears the sacramentum of the gladiator brotherhood.

Episode 3:

As the gladiators prepare for the series of fights that will be the highlight of the upcoming Vulcanalia festival, Spartacus cleverly manoeuvres to secure the right to battle Crixus, the unbeaten champion of Capua, in the primus or final battle. Despite his wife Lucretia's objections, Batiatus reminds her that Spartacus' bravery and previous exploits have "struck a chord with the public's interest". Meanwhile, Lucretia schemes to win favor with the wife of Gaius Claudius Glaber, the crafty and devious Ilithyia. At a pre-fight banquet, she interests her in the desirous Crixus, although he is secretly enamoured of Naevia, one of the domestic slaves. At the Vulcanalia, Spartacus embarrasses his owners publicly, both by beginning to fight too early, and by surrendering instead of dying.

i just finished mad men season 1, and i really do not get it. it seem like it's nothing special in the least. no great characters, no great acting, no great writing, no great story. it's just a random soap opera.

january jones is spectacular though.
