And this will also be an argument why Marty is not YK (which is so LOL but whatever)

- Marty and his first mistress have an ass-eating scene, she's way younger, and he gets real territorial when she blows a guy who is much more suitable for her as a partner

- His next mistress it shows is a girl he tried to "rescue" from a trailer park whore house about 7 years back, who wants to be the wife-role to Marty, unlike the first mistress -- she says she wants to hear all about Martys awful day, forgives him for whatever he thinks makes him a bad man, ect -- then she says point blank: "F me in the A".

Just a hunch but I think the "anal connection" between both mistresses are on purpose -- obviously anal sex with young girls while you have a wife and kids is pretty low and taboo and something to be covered up -- yet it seems Marty is sort of justified in doing this, I mean biologically older men should propagate with young women -- and he is doing so still by "society's code" -- whereas the cult sex acts and fantasies are still satisfying the mind's ID, but doing it in a more fraudulent manner, and dressing it up in the creepiest ways possible. Obviously the killing part as well, and also the victims aren't really doing the cult out of free will.

This just shows a regular guy like Marty can still lust for perverted acts without being tied to a systematic cult of abduction sex drugs and murder.

I mean did you see the look on his face before tossing Daddario's salad? Dude was in heaven.

No one is immune to giving in to the ID, there's just the more accepted way "Marty's" and the unaccepted way "Yellow King cult".

Please excuse my tendency for essay
Bottom line is he likes to fvck younger girls, and he like to fvk chicks in the ass, I will say it's pretty standard. You're looking to hard into it.

The speed and occasional obviousness used by the writer(s) of TD are imo somewhat necessary given the time restraints involved. It's either do it the way they are doing it, or keep us in the dark the whole way and then cram everything into a two-to-three hour long series finale reveal. This way is better imo.

It definitely should've been 12 episodes rather than 8, it's not like the 4 extra hours of material would've prevented McConnaughey from signing on at all. But I think the problem goes deeper than that, it would require a drastically different storytelling style. The whole thing is set up as 'time is a flat circle' and we can kind of look at one moment in the sprawling story and see the whole picture thereby reinforcing the theme. As a consequence, you're going to have some viewers drawing bad conclusions like Rust is the killer and holding onto that misconception until they get surprised by reality at whatever stage. But the people that are tracking along properly are going to see a lot of signs pointing in a certain direction in '95 '02 and '12 and all of these big reveals have become way too obvious way too early.

It seems to have been set up that way on purpose, maybe to draw a broader audience trying to offset the deep and dark philosophical themes to let the show still become a cash cow. Maybe there's just too big of a gap between the ability of Gilligan and everybody else to embed and interweave the most important plot points to elevate the entire story. Idk why it is what it is exactly, but I'm sure that it could've been done much better even given the time constraints.

Obviously the plot development couldn't have come close to BB even if it was 12 episodes compared to 70 or 80 but it seems no effort was made at all to bridge the gap. If there were I could say to myself 'ok Breaking Bad wins on plot with 5 seasons to create everything but TD takes acting, themes and dialog to a new level for TV, and with a new cast and story each season I may actually prefer TD.' Instead I'm starting to say 'all of these nice window dressings sure are great, but where the **** is the heart of it, the well told surprising and inventive plot?"

It seems McConaughey is solidifying himself on a short list of best actors around today. If they can bring on someone to rival him next season, and that's a big if, I really hope it's extended by a few episodes and the show with Detective in the title adds at least an ounce of mystery in the process. If not I think it's squandering the first opportunity to put an A lister into a long form story with an amazingly created universe to create something fulfilling on every level.

When Professor Hippy McCool inevitably writes his masterpiece, "Modular Immorality in the True Detective Ethosphere", I look forward to the chapter on eating ass.

But as much as some of you apparently think Marty being the Yellow King would be awful, you can't disagree that the show has certainly set up the possibility.
It is a possibility, but in no way setup by the show. Decades of demeaning TV plotting programming us to expect "gotcha" moments is the setup. The show has actually setup the opposite, in that it's carried us along a fairly straight-forward trajectory. Within the first two episodes we know that whomever they got (Ledoux) was only a part of the picture, we know that there was a falling out between two men struggling with their flaws, we are led to believe the detectives suspect Rust, and it's intimated that there is a larger conspiracy with the church. The following four episodes have followed that path without fail, and at no point flinched towards Marty. Rust is a more likely possibility, but only as much as eating glass is a healthier diet than eating poison.

I think it'd be impossible at this point to have Marty be the killer and it be anything short of terrible. Even if they somehow managed to pull it off, it would only be successful in undermining the very things I've grown to love about the show. The best analogy I can think of is wanting to give a great gift to a friend's son by buying him a house while the rest of friends and family give thoughtful smaller gifts. The plot twist would just be selfish and out of place amid the collection of things that make True Detective great.

Did anyone else think it was weird how Marty checked his gun after Cohle pulled him over?

Like he's actually giving some credence to the idea that Rust is a killer now??

Mark,

Marty hasn't seen Rust in 10 years, was just given information that implicates him as a killer, and he looks like hell warmed over. If I had pistol, I'd bring it along just in case, too.

but then rust is the one who can't sleep, so maybe marty is actually rust's alter-ego. or maybe it's the other way around. if marty's wife is right in that rust knows exactly who he is then i guess rust has to be the brad pitt who knows that he is a figment of norton's (marty's) imagination/psychosis.

perhaps marty is just transferring his insomnia and undercover drug use onto the imaginary rustin cohle and that is what has caused his personality split. say that marty's daughter was abused by the cult, who else better to go off the deep end and create a new personality for the purpose of an off-the-books obsessive investigation.

i mean come on, does Rustin Cohle actually sound like a real name to you? or does it sound something like Sammy Jankiss? so i guess marty is not the yellow king, but is in fact rustin cohle.
