I absolutely love this show. I feel like I need to watch it again all the way through because, based on this thread, there's no doubt I have been missing a ton of details that would likely enhance my enjoyment. I just figured out last night that MM's character is named RusT, not Russ. ffs

yeah, one of the biggest themes in the show is definitely hypocrisy. rust rants about religious hypocrisy and is desperate to believe he has higher moral standards than everyone around him (while struggling with drinking, perpetually unable to hold down a r/s, can't avoid pulling the trigger on maggie), marty rants about family, gets violently angry at the thought of people mistreating young girls (while destroying his marriage via mistreating young girls).

i don't think it matters that marty gave them a "choice". he wanted to beat them, it wasn't accidental that they put him beating them in the same ep he bangs a teen.

Show develops, it becomes clear that there will be a falling out 7 years later and the thought is 'well they'll be ****ing in 2002 then.' Then 5 episodes after the first dinner it all goes down so neat and tidy and that one act is the driving force of the episode in a short season. Could probably come up with 5-10 other examples just like that in the past 2-3 weeks that accounted for the majority of plot advancement. Not to say there aren't small and nice touches like Marty telling the young girl to do something else then years later we meet her again and learn that she has and becomes the coffin nail for Marty's marriage. Why can't some of the bigger points be elegant like that and come out of nowhere?

The acting and dialog, (esp. philosophical) is GOAT and I guess a show can't be best at everything but it feels like they clearly missed out on an opportunity to take things to the next level by developing the story with more suspense. It's a richly created universe with all sorts of possibilities to level the viewer, and it just hasn't been done. Instead the first instinct is dead-on accurate hours in advance, with all of these breadcrumbs along the way to hint that it's going to actually happen, then it happens so simply and it's a let down.

When everything was coming to a head with Fring, there were a lot of people who thought that Walt was actually going to get killed and the show would go on. But for the people that didn't, how could they see Fring walking away from the car coming? It was flooring to watch. Then Hector winking at Hank as the elevator closes? TD is fundamentally better in several important ways, but the plot is too hollow. It can be argued that's not the point of the show ad nauseum, and maybe it isn't, but the worst part is that it didn't need to be. All of the characters and plot devices are all sitting there, but the writing cheaped out on plot to spoon feed everything and it's disappointing.

It's the best show since Breaking Bad, but unless something drastically changes it'll never be better and it could've been with the unique advantages the show has going for it.
This is a decent post, but I think it's kind of unfair to compare plot development in TD (a mini series) with BB (an actual series with multiple seasons and many more eps with which to develop characters and plot). The speed and occasional obviousness used by the writer(s) of TD are imo somewhat necessary given the time restraints involved. It's either do it the way they are doing it, or keep us in the dark the whole way and then cram everything into a two-to-three hour long series finale reveal. This way is better imo.

I found it interesting we KNOW maggie basically lied her way through that interview

great article on why Marty might be the Yellow King.

The above poster is segmented so that Marty's yellow hair - his crown - is cut off.

...Interesting....

just in this last episode, we were shown marty throwing up after beating the two teenagers. why would a rapist and murderer throw up after beating up a couple of kids?

lol...I'm not saying he is - I certainly don't believe that's the way the show is going - I just find the poster and the interpretation of it interesting.

But as much as some of you apparently think Marty being the Yellow King would be awful, you can't disagree that the show has certainly set up the possibility.

I thought the same thing. It seemed out of character for her given how well she had treated Rust throughout the show up to that point. He didn't deserve that.

Not really. It'd be terrible if he was. What we are seeing is what we get. It'd be a stupid twist for the hell of having a crazy twist.
