Slanche,

I felt just like you did watching that. However, I wonder if the commentary was results-oriented. Had they made some basic French omelettes, maybe we would have heard “this is top chef, not a diner, you didn’t elevate this omelette in any way?”

Nonetheless, you just can’t be a top chef and **** up an omelette the way they did!

It was a horrible display and definitely downgraded my current thoughts on the strength of this season's competitors overall.
Honestly I don't think they would have been out of line to just send them all home.

fun fact, raw eggs aren't inherently dangerous. in fact, padma has been known to eat them many times on the show as part of a steak tartare!
Yes, I attribute it to pressure to some degree, but like many things being a good chef involves a lot of performance under pressure. You get in the weeds you have to make good decisions and get yourself out. You get an important critic in the restaurant everything has to come out just so. Your food supplier runs out of a main ingredient or gives you a bad batch...the list goes on.

Everybody is going to have an off day or fail to hit the mark on certain challenges but three chefs failing that hard on something as simple as an omelet is more than just folding under pressure. To me it shows a lack of completeness in those competitors. Which is fine, I'm sure they can run very decent restaurants where you'd enjoy your meal most of the time but it just doesn't reflect well on the competition. Those were amateur mistakes. It makes me wonder if 90% of the cast would've messed that up if that was the straight up elimination challenge? Probably not I know, but had those three chefs really distinguished themselves as being a cut below up to that point? I don't think I had that sense.

And yes I shouldn't have said ridden with salmonella, but raw pasteurized eggs do increase the risk of salmonella poisoning albeit unlikely.

It isn't even worth mentioning nowadays.

i can't imagine altitude came in to play with the omelette cooking, but i sure don't seem to remember any of the chefs doing something as simple as this

It could have potentially been the altitude coming into play, but these guys are professional chefs at the highest level. Mistakes on a perfect French omelette should be unfathomable. I'd have been perfectly fine if they sent home everyone too. In a kitchen, everything that can go wrong does go wrong; the range doesn't get hot enough; the piece of equipment you need ****s the bed. Executive chefs have to deal w/ this stuff all of the time and need to be able to execute plates within an expected timely manner. I'm sure the pressure is immensely higher than most everyday situations, and I'm sure the time constraints are as tough as they've ever faced, but they have worked through their careers dealing with time constraints and imperfection on a daily basis.

The part of the episode maybe even more egregious than their egg mishaps were every scene featuring Logan Paul. I have not hated an individual about whom I didn't even know existed in my life. I wish he would have gotten salmonella from those egg dishes and dropped dead.

I must really suck at cooking b/c that doesn't look simple at all.

How good are these chefs? Like, if Michael Symon was on, would he crush?

Michael Symon would steamroll this competition pretty easily imo, this show is not like the earlier seasons they mostly look for new up and coming chefs as far as I can tell

This post seems wrong in all sorts of ways. Not sure we're watching the same show.

I'm rooting for the Vietnamese guy but he seems to be over his head. I don't think he's long for the show.

? Did you see the earlier seasons? How many of these chefs have you heard of before this season?

Michael Symon was very renowned even before he started going on TV, I'm going to assume you didn't see his season of Iron Chef because he was absolutely dominant. Not sure what you think is wrong about what I said, I honestly don't think its close but I'm listening.

I also just watched an episode where 3 of them ****ed up an omelette and several them are consistently messing up on proteins. I'm not saying they are bad chefs or up and coming in a sense that they are fresh out of culinary school, they just haven't really proven themselves yet relative to a chef like Michael Symon

Most James Beard "best chef" for whatever region would crush.

There have been many James Beard nominees and winners on the show, and they don't seem to do much better than average. A twice nominated Best Chef Northwest was the third contestant out this season.

Went to Tyler’s restaurant he co-owns with another CT chef yesterday for happy hour with my buddies. Cook and the Bear. We just got a ton of apps and smaller plates. All very, very good. Not “fine dining” by any means though which I think is the point of this place.

From what I’ve read he seems like a good dude and I’ll try to hit up his main restaurant for a tasting menu. Seems reasonably priced at $80 for 7 courses.

I was really impressed what they accomplished under these conditions. Many of those dishes looked delicious.
They got me, I was sure the cakes would win it in a landslide, no way just rolling pasta on a mandoline would beat that, I had Preggo ahead of that dish, too.

Fatima being all miserable all episode was hilarious, they really milked that concept and found some gold there.

I really like this cast, they give great sound-bites and are all so very different, yet, so talented. Apart from the omelette-disaster they were no colossal failures.
LCK is delivering, too.

Really enjoyed this ep also for all these reasons. LCK was a pleasant surprise since it felt like the guy they "wanted" to win was Kwame, who I find deeply uninteresting, but instead the two chefs I wanted to see more of both got put in.

Still can picture pretty much any chef winning the whole thing or going home next week, which is pretty unusual at this point. Tu had been the last guy left who I felt like was in a bit over his head.

Tonight was the episode John Besh was supposed to appear. Bravo did a really good job editing him out. The only time I could see him was when they did a shot of Padma, Tom and Gail and you could see his arm next to Padma.

When he was on the episode of Iron Chef last week, Food Network did a horrible job. There were so many bizzaro camera shots that made no sense.

I like the Olympic style thing they did.
