Also agree with above re: Seth MacFarlane -- if you don't like Family Guy/American Dad/etc. that's fine, but the dude is just a sick, sick talent.

exactly... family guy is worthless, but macfarlane is uber talented. great energy... great timing... he just nails it.

the question is... why is family guy soooooo bad?

i disagree. bayer is #1, and she is not worthy of #1, but she crushed that honey boo boo bit.

McKinnon has potential

He has three or four passable impressions that I got bored of long ago. One of those apparently isnt Obama.

Not sure how the new guys will settle in, far too early to judge. I really liked Paul Brittain and he didnt even make it to the end of the last season (his second year iirc) so my opinions in general possibly dont match everyone else. One such example is I love Vanessa Bayer and think she is great at what she is good at and passable at what she isnt. She is no Poehler but she is as good as Wiig. But some seem to hate her for reasons I just cant fathom.

Overall I thought the episode was pretty good, nothing was outstanding which was a little worrying and they relied a lot on the talents of McFarlane who I thought put on a great performance but I get the feeling the first time they get a crappy host the show will bomb hard as I just dont see the cast talent required to carry one. Or maybe its just a case they know how to compliment a host without stepping on his toes. Luckily next week is JGL, then they have Tom Hiddleston and they close the opening 4 announced with Daniel Craig so they have a ton of talent to work with in the start before the cast really needs to step up their game and we find out.

Also Nasim Pedrad is grossly underutilised on the show still.
pedrad is obviously #2, with McKinnon as close 3.

all Pedrad or McKinnon need is one breakthrough character and they could easily ursup Bayer by the end of the season

the worst episode of Family Guy still has at least 3 great gags. i mean, this is coming from a guy who has written 2 family guy specs, and just loves random humor, but still, at this point it may actually be an underrated show. I openly admit it's not as good as it once was, but find me a show in season 9-10 that is, and it would probably be the first.

i also cannot stand when people who hate FG lump American Dad in with it... American Dad is one of the funniest shows on tv, animated or not, and it has been for a good 5 years now, yet people seemed to have watched one early episode, passed judgement and stuck with "it's a FG clone, MacFarlane sucks, wahhh" attitiude. also, it's not even in his hands anymore really.

well, i just got done with last nights...

pretty bad. the monologue might be the worst I've ever seen. it was short, stupid, not topical, and it made no sense whatsoever to the host.

the first most interesting man sketch was incredibly unfunny. the 2nd one had a nice payoff, but it was still a weak bit.

i still don't like jay pharoah, thought the cold open was terrible. Nasim didn't sound or look like Kelly, and it was way too long as always.

mumford and sons were good.

the beatles sketch was good, i always liked those, but the stuff the guys were saying inbetween the chourus wasn't funny.

jgl was funny in that girl sketch, but it was stupid otherwise

the jay/keenan rap show thing was terrible

i dont even remember anything else. wasn't even half as good as last week. JGL is a good host too, they really dropped the ball.

^Totally disagree w/ the monologue which I thought was great and easily the funniest bit of the night. That being said, when the monologue makes me laugh the most, it's problem.

if the stuff in between the chorus of the Beatles sketch wasn't funny, what made that sketch "good"? I think it must just be because you "always liked" them and it felt familiar.

I thought this week's episode was solid, although my standards have gone down every year, opening monologue was decent, thought the Strahan/Kelly thing had some funny moments, I'm still a Pharoah fan, but I do think he hasn't been at his best yet this year, and IMO the tampon commercial was the highlight.

Enjoyed Mumoford and Sons and of course Weekend Update.

Went downhill towards the end with the rapper thing and the one where he was dressed as a girl, but it was one of the rare episodes where I'm not fast forwarding halfway through most sketches.

Once again Conz has everything wrong up to and including liking Mumford and Sons.

They used JGL well, it wasn't unfettered brilliance because SNL never is. All the filmed bits were really strong .. maybe I am just happy because there were no giant stinkers and only one recurring sketch, but I that was solid throughout.

Last edited by Pudge714; 09-24-2012 at 12:05 PM. Reason: Conz is right about American Dad though, that show is great.

Hated weekend update most of all. It would've been OK if they stopped it after two segments like they usually do, for some asinine reason they added the third segment with Jay Pharoah, and the rest was history.

That bit was excruciatingly terrible

Did you watch the Channing Tatum episode that aired when "Magic Mike" was out in theatres in which he did the exact same thing? Ya know, b/c he was the star of the movie, and it was relevant to him? This was the worst monologue in recent memory. you're out of your mind...

but you are right about the Beatles sketch... i honestly just like the stories into the singing aspect of that bit. the jokes sucked though, so i guess "good" was an overstatement.

not a band i give 2 craps about, but on a terrible episode of a show that usually has terrible musical performances, they were pretty good.

It seems like the 1st show of the season or whenever they come back after a short hiatus are always better than the shows they just have 1 week to write.

no, and yeah, if they just copied an old monologue w/ a more random person and timing then it's fairly lame

the tampon commercial was great, but snl has done parody commercials before about men getting too involved w/ tampons, so just just changing it to the gop/politicicans and not advertising executives brought down hard what would have been best of the night for me

WHAT?!?! I'm not sure which I find more impressive. Not more impressive, but what I would much rather do.

If anyone has heard Bill Burr's bit on Schwarzenegger (well, well worth it if you do) but Seth is easily #2.

I don't know if anyone bothered to watch, but Weekend Update Thursday included a stellar bit from one of the new performers imo:

this show reminds me of my baseball team. I'm faithful to a fault, watch always, and everytime I stick up for them to other people, they kick me in the ballsack. (The Mets btw)

just blasted through the Daniel Craig episode... horrendous. I can't remember any stand outs. I had to fast forward the cold open, i still don't think Jay is that good. The monologue was long as not that funny. And then... it was kind of a blue. The space sketch with Bobby talking about his kitty was one of the worst in recent memory. Another sketch where Fred plays a chick in that same house set they always use around 11:45. Even Muse, who I kinda like, played some slow crap.

Actually, there was one highlight - Kate McKinnon. She was strong. The Jodie Foster and Ellen impressions in that Bond girl sketch were right on(Vanessa Bayer did her best to try and ruin that one.) And her spanish fresco woman was good.

Craig wasn't a great host. He flubbed his lines a few times. There were a couple of sketches where he had potential, but they ended up going nowhere.

bad. 2 bad episodes in row after the great premiere.

Maybe the worst episode I've ever seen.

That Kirby sketch was one of the worst. I'm expecting to see it at least 10 more times.

Definitely worst ep of the season so far, outside of McKinnon who is great imo.
