I feel like it's too early in the show for the main conflict to be overthrowing Nucky.

I missed a small second at the end - what was Nucky's butler up to?

I found it rather amusing how quickly Margaret, despite her portrayal as being more principled and independent than the average floozy Nucky's been acquainted with, rushes back to his arms after seeing the rag premonition forecasting "destitution" -- it doesn't seem appropriate for the very feminist message her character has been championing throughout the series, that's for sure.

The coats the characters are wearing look extremely high quality, better than most modern day ones I've seen, even those in film. Are hand-tailored coats a lost art or something that the showrunners revived?

Angela' cutting off her hair was a metaphor for her cutting off her ties with Marie, who seems to have seriously hurt her -- it's supposed to convey her transforming herself from idealistic artiste to the loving type house-marm Jimmy wants her to be. Unfortunately, she chose a particularly severe haircut, she looks much better with free-flowing tresses.

why would she do this, earlier in the ep, jimmy says how he missed the feeling of her hair when he was away in france. i don't think she cut her hair for jimmy, but i could be wrong

I don't think she cut FOR Jimmy per se, I think she did it more for herself to steel herself in making a painful decision to abandon her dream with Marie and her art for a more pedestrian lifestyle. You're right, I don't think Jimmy liked her decision all that much -- but that would make sense from the position that it was more a personal thing and less for Jimmy. I've also found, anecdotally, that lots of woman aren't aware of how men treasure long hair, partly because men aren't particularly aware of it either and don't precisely articulate that preference. (Unlike say, preferences everyone knows men like, such as big boobs, blonde hair, and/or a tiny waist.) Her feeling might described as being akin to clearing off the table before starting a massive project; "I'm ready to do this."

good ep, except the hit sequence was a little too much of a godfather ripoff

I liked the resolution of the Thompson-Rothstein war, I think. Nucky's outrageous price was very in the spirit of his character. I especially liked the montage with the assassinations interspersed with Nucky's speech; the minimalist drums were very fitting for the moment, I thought. That character Richard Harrow also had a presence about him that makes me really hope he returns in a bigger role in the second season; whereas his little mask made him seem pathetic and small in earlier episodes, I thought it gave him a really malovelent look here. Incidentally, Jimmy's killing of the one D'Alessio brother on the barbershop chair reminded me of a very similar scene in the movie Eastern Promises.

One thing slightly bothers me though: The press shouldn't have swallowed Nucky's story. After all, the newspaper article shown said "Woods Killers found." One of the D'Alessio brothers would have been found with his throat slit -- that doesn't seem very reminiscent of a police raid to me.

Strange theory: The Commodore's black caretaker was paid off, I think, by Jimmy and his mom. I think she somehow communicated that to Nucky via cryptic Bible verse and he bought her off (again) to protect them. You see, the opening previews to the episode make it unambiguously clear, through the knowing look that she gave to Jimmy, that Gillian was in on the arsenic plot. Thus, that makes the caretaker's silence at the meeting the doctor convened quite suspicious: Why wouldn't she reveal Gillian's name to take some of the heat off her, especially in an hostile environment where she could very well be lynched and has few legal protections? I think Gillian set up the details of the crime carefully, knowing that the black caretaker would be an easy fall gal if anything ever became uncovered. I also don't put much stock into the "he treated her badly" motive: despite his bad treatment, I thought she seemed rather fond of him -- "let me rub your belly just like you like Commodore" -- and really, her treatment wasn't any worse than the way Nucky treats his German manservant. She was paid off, and I think this will be explored more fully in Season 2.

Great ep, loved the "Godfather" massacre and the Jimmy/Nucky showdown ("You're my hero!"), and the wife/son payoff was satisfying after the buildup.

Very good season, still think there's some stuff that held it back from being as great as it could have been given the talent involved.

I agree. I thought they would focus more on capone and how he becomes the legend that he is.i realize that nucky is the main focus of the show... but I thought capone would get more plot development than he got in this season. guess we'll see in later seasons.

I agree I thought it was kind of corny that finding the rag in the cake was the final straw for her to get back w/ nuck but whatever.

Very underwhelming finale imo. Sick set-up ep for next season tho.

The camera shot of Harrow standing over and pointing his shotgun at the D'Alessio kid was awesome.

I could watch a lot of minute of Harrow just being terrifying and killing people.

I don't have any giant objections to anything, but this didn't knock my socks off. Well done, but nothing that OMGed me.
