Since we are talking about those shows, it looks like Yellowstone will conclude when it airs the final installment this Summer, and there is going to be another spin off with Matthew McConaughey. lol

It's also hilarious, the marines basically are non-stop with gallows humor and (often racist/sexist/homophobic) jokes at each other's expense. It manages to convey the feeling that the viewer is just thrust into this group of marines and riding along with them as they invade Iraq, like the Rolling Stone reporter in the show is.
GK is a masterpiece and incredibly faithful to the book it was based on (written by the reporter embedded with them).

the book is also fantastic highly recommend it.

oh and fun fact the actor who plays fruity Rudy is the real marine.

to add to the conversation....yes, BoB is the GOAT.

The new All Quiet On the Western Front is absolutely brutal...trench warfare was horrific.

The greatest war film ever made is Come and See, an 80s Soviet-era film about the Nazi atrocities in Belarus...from the POV of a teen boy. It's a masterpiece.

been watching some yellowstone and i totally get why everybody loves it - they are tough and smart but also rich and powerful and real men not pansies, it's the best of all worlds and really how most men would like to be, ie the actual cowboys wished they weren't marginalized and poor and the wealthy with power wished they knew how to change their own oil

having said that, i don't think it's all that great a show

i also absolutely lost it when they hire someone named nguyen to do opposition research, she then decides to publish an article about her client's corrupt family and blackmails them and they immediately are like "sure we'll help you bury my dad in this article" - i don't care what issues he had with his dad at that moment, let's pretend that bridge was burned and the he really didn't care about his dad anymore etc etc, he's still not instantly going to cave within seconds of being blackmailed

i had issues with that, toss in that they give her a vietnamese named pronounced "win" but she pronounces it like someone reading nguyen for the first time would say it - like how do you **** that up - you want so badly to be inclusive but then include things you don't know the most basic thing about

also the hot indian is super hot and also not indian but half chinese

this one is pretty hot too though, almost enough to forgive the "sure let's let that woman i hired to do opposition research blackmail us because apparently she doesn't care about her 6 figure opposition research career and wants to be <40k a year journalist instead"

the busty sister is also very sexy but i can't stand her unwarranted confidence and woe is me view to life

this one also hot

but alas went with hot over representative as she's also half asian half native

It's much easier to achieve and maintain greatness over 10 episodes than in a full series. Some say Fawlty Towers is the greatest sitcom of all time. It's very funny, but there are only 12 episodes. Maintain that greatness over 120+ episodes, then come talk to me.

In another TV thread I mentioned how I admire Flight of the Conchords for ending after two seasons. Not dragging something out unnecessarily is important. BoB is pretty much the perfect length.

I would be shocked if any sitcom that is over 120 episodes could maintain such a high quality as BoB.

Yeah that's one of the things I notice about a lot of the British shows. They are only like 6-8eps per season and usually end after a few seasons. Makes it much easier to keep the quality level high for the entire run. British version of The Office, Detectorists, etc.

Agree Generation Kill is fantastic.

I was in Navy, not Marines, but during this exact time period, and I can attest that this show really nails what it felt like.

I believe Carnivale is the only big HBO show that I never watched. Even though it was cancelled, is it worth watching?

It's not a good thing that shows go on far too long and suffer massive dips in quality.

Would like to know the answer to this as well. I’ve only heard from a few people that I should check it out but I can’t bring myself to start it lol

Carnivale. I remember liking it, but its worth knowing that it was cancelled after it was filmed, so its not that it ends on a cliffhanger ... but it does just kinda stop. The story was clearly set to go on for more seasons, but those seasons never came.

I’m really enjoying Shrinking. There needs to be a Bill Lawrence show airing all throughout each year. They will never be as good as early Scrubs, but they always work well for me!

jodie foster starring in it is huge for me, given her legacy/brand and how few projects she does + history of that show I can't imagine she'd sign up for it unless it was going to be a home run

Yep, after her 1 episode on the first True Detective in 2014, she went 4 years waiting for the perfect project to come along. Hotel Artemis, imdb score 6.1, in 2018.

Wow. I had no idea Jodie Foster was in True Detective and I've watched season 1 fully through atleast twice. Her part must be extremely unmemorable or I'm just very unobservant.
