I don't think it's shocking that this is the worst season. it is known that the books took a sharp dive in quality after ASOS. You can't completely blame the showrunners when the source material gets so much worse as well. Season 4 still largely had ASOS to lean on, while we are full bore into AFFC/ADWD territory now. I think a lot of the faults that the books had (Meereen politics, Dorne stuff not seeming to go anywhere, KINGSMOOT, Arya off on her own) were going to be problematic - the world grows so much bigger and there were already too many things to deal with for a TV show.

having the Kingsmoot and Darkstar etc just wasn't going to work for the show. imagine the revolt in TV land at having to watch Euron and Victarion and Asha...

The set up of the Sand Snakes reminded me of Yara(Asha) and the Ironborn getting all psyched up to rescue Theon, only to run away because Ramsey had dogs. So what now, Doran just locks them and Ellaria up and that's a wrap for Dorne this season?

I really liked the wedding scene. It was creepy and beautiful at the same time. Theon stating his name and house was powerful.

While Dorne is definitely bad, I'm liking the rest of it. Loved Sansa owning Myranda.

I dunno, I think the Iron Islands stuff could have made for really good TV if they wanted to include it (though you probably would have had to cut the Asha rescue Theon/nevermind plot). If you leave Asha having just successfully stormed Moat Cailin or whatever, then retreated you could do an episode or two reacting to her father's death and deciding to make a run at the Kingsmoot. Then you introduce badass sea warrior Victarion, and creepy, sinister Crow's Eye. Euron is nothing if not theatrical - his arriving on the Silence, presenting the treasures, blowing the dragon horn and promising to gain control of dragons and take over Westeros could have been good TV.

Of course, the show runners would then have to have actually included Euron and Victarion for the rest of the show. But the stuff in the Iron Islands from AFFC could have worked fine I think.

I'm trying really hard not to fly off the handle at what I consider a really scummy post like this. Surely you must be aware that for thousands of years in our world, for a large number of women, marriage was essentially a legalized form of rape.

And yes, Dany was raped on her wedding night, too. She was raped repeatedly by Khal Drogo in early episodes. She later developed affection for Drogo, because relationships in the pre-modern world (and our own) were sometimes weird and ****ed up like that. Cersei was raped frequently by Robert. She was indisputably raped by Jaime under Joffrey's corpse.

Being in a relationship or a marriage is not a permanent writ of consent to be used sexually. What happened to Sansa was indisputably rape. It was perhaps not "gratuitous" (it may legitimately advance the plot), nor was it "shocking" per se (because anyone paying attention could see it coming a mile away), but the showrunners have repeatedly demonstrated that they simply do not understand the dynamics of sexual assault and rarely deal with the fallout and what it means for the characters actually experiencing it. Dwelling on Theon is just the latest in a series of clumsy missteps.

Why do you continue to watch the show? Comparing anything to Dexter post seas 4 is just insane. That was quite literally some of the worst TV, especially on HBO or Showtime, ever.

What kind of stuff do you think would have made it better? I definitely agree it was rushed, pretty much one scene an then bam holy army in the city, but I'm not sure what could have been done to fix that.

We've all said that this was going to be the worst season by far, but I don't think anyone was expecting it to be this bad. A lot of this is, imo, poor planning by the show runners and not setting up some better plotlines earlier on. I also think at least one major plotline needed to be introduced this season. Iron Islands would've been fine, Griff would have been fine, or the original Dorne plot line. All of them would've been a mess, but having one new set of characters and plot would have helped a lot of the problems the show is having atm.


Yeah seriously. This method of fixing GRRM's overused plot device of sending someone on a fool's errand by instead sending someone on an even stupider fool's errand that makes no sense isn't working so far. Is Yara even going to be used anymore?
