I know exactly what protagonist means. Walt is the protagonist in the sense that Jesse is the deuteragonist. He is the focal point of the show. You can appropriate protagonist to mean 'hero' if you want, but the word has more than one application. Gilligan's application, my application, and yours are all correct, but at least give me the credit of not assuming that I meant it in a sense that would directly contradict what I'd said just beforehand.
I didn't mean to say it's pointless to discuss these things - you're right, it's not. It's interesting. What is pointless is trying to draw a conclusion, make an argument and come up with a definitive answer - Walt is a hero because of X, he's not a hero because of Y. When ambiguity is the endgame, you're just going to go round in circles trying to hit an impossible target.
