This is one of many reasons I hate this stupid one-game playoff. This game is literally going to be the difference (for me, but I've heard other people talk about it the same way) between being pleasantly surprised and happy with our season, and considering it a failure. I really don't consider us to have even "made the playoffs" if when we lose.

GMan, it was over when we went what? 1-6 or 2-5 vs Toronto the last 2 series we had against them. The Yankees this year have been a very streaky team. And the streak they have been on of late is the kind you find in dirty underwear.

Seriously. You cannot rely on the HR all year long. play small ball once in a while. It's a baseball fundamental for a reason. JFC

You can argue that about the season in general (although to some extent you have to play to the strengths of your players...are you gonna start having ARod and Beltran bunting and hit-and-running?), but what could you do in this game? We were getting overmatched by good pitching and had one guy make it as far as 2nd base.

What it comes down to is that Tanaka had zero room for error, and he made a couple of isolated bad pitches that he paid for, we knew that's what we had to worry about with him. Then once we gave up the 3rd run, it took the rest of the wind out of our sails, it may as well have been 8-0.

I'd have had Gardner, Young, Didi, Refsnyder, lay down bunts, Headley too. Having trouble getting a good swing on the ball? Lay down a bunt and get on base. Be productive in your at bats. Mccann? Sure, if they are giving him the entire left side of the infield open, like they were, bunt down the line and take your HIT.

It just doesn't seem hard for an mlb player to hit a soft slap too third base area

It'd be a terrible hit but if nobody is standing there they might get a double

read a report saying NYY wont make a play for Price at all and they want beltran and texs contract to expires first before going after someone hard

wtf

They realize the team isn't that good and need to rebuild

They ran really good to have won so many games

Hell, if we could somehow move Texeira and Beltran (not horribly farfetched if we eat some of the salary) I wouldn't complain. Tex in particular had a really good season before he got hurt, so his value is high, and I'm fine going ahead with Bird.

I think the last couple of years have shown that in the post-steroid era, having a bunch of old dudes on your team really sucks. Sure ARod had a nice season, but it's because he played like one game in the field. And DHing him all the time means you can't get other guys a break without sitting them completely.

The problem is that ownership doesn't like the idea of really sucking for a season or two, so they'll probably do some hybrid half-assed rebuild where we stay on the periphery of the playoffs, and don't get as good as fast as we could.

I really hope that A-rod gets benched more next year than happened this year. People like Tex, and Beltran & Mccann could benefit immensely from being a DH instead of being on their feet the whole game.

I really hope that Bird stays with the Yanks, and is on the 25 man roster next year, he's proven he can play up in the Bigs. The only issue will be getting him enough playing time.

Hopefully our pitching staff bounces back next year as well. Nova & Pineda need to be more consistently good, Tanaka I think he has to get some better velocity differential between his pitches. Hopefully Eovaldi doesn't lose what he had going after that disaster of a game he had against the marlins (which was his turning point)

I can see Greg Bird being the Yankees everyday 1B in the future.
And the Yankees do have Judge, Heathcott, Mason Williams, in the pipeline, as well as Chris Young & Dustin Ackley as subs.

I would feel happy about adding Price on a 5 year deal. He and tanaka 1-2 would be potent. Can;t say they wouldn't be competitive

Except for the last Month and a half.

Beltran was the Yankees best hitter the entire year, sure he had a terrible April, but if you take that pout he was a .300+ hitter.
