I don't blame McCarthy. There has got to be a better kicker out there. We're going to need one in the playoffs, maybe to just get to the playoffs. Crosby missed a 50 yarder, got a 2nd chance and missed it again! McCarthy has no faith in him. We never needed Crosby to hit a big kick in the 2010 run. They need to get another kicker in.
And the clock management at the end of that half was laughable. Rodgers gets sacked with 25 seconds left. Do we want to use our TO right away so we can run another play? No, we'll just let the clock run all the way down and give a struggling kicker a 50 yarder. Coach better.
Cut Crosby immediately after this game. Don't let him kick another this game. Go for it on all 4th downs. And stop running, McCarthy. He's running right at their strength. Awful gameplan, awful coaching, awful field goal kicker and that may cost us a winnable game. Defense will have to come up with another big play to win it.
I can live with Crosby missing the 50 yarder (even twice), but the misses inside of 40 are frustrating. I don't know if the stats back me on this, but it feels like NFL kickers have gotten so good that every other team is pretty much automatic from inside 40.
I like Crosby's big leg, but I am starting to prefer a guy who is consistent on short ones and has no chance on a 50 plus yarder.
Who cares about hitting 50 yarders. They need a guy who can hit a clutch kick when they need it. It just turned out that they never needed him in their 2010 playoff run but can that happen again? This is a team playing with a chip on its shoulder after last year's playoff loss, the ref debacle in Seattle and all the injuries. It has the feel of 2010 when Jennings, Benson, Woodson and Matthews will come back and they'll get healthy at the right time. They need a reliable kicker.
If Crosby is still booting field goals in practice and his leg is healthy then there's no reason to get rid of him. 18 regular season field goal attempts isn't going to give you very useful data.
I think they should bring someone in to at least put pressure on Crosby. Id like to say it's a case of the yips, and maybe it is, but I haven't trusted weeman in clutch spots ever, and I'm going to need oxygen if I have to suffer through watching him set up for a kick to win a playoff game.
I think it's safe to say Crosby is already feeling the pressure
I don't think bringing another guy in to "compete" with him will do the team any good. If you want a new kicker, then cut him and bring in someone else.

This.
Bringing in a kicker for competition is only something you do in preseason imo
The Bears are finally playing teams like Houston, SF and Seattle that we played in the first half. They got an easy pass with their first half schedule. This game coming up at NYG will be GB's toughest remaining game. Offense still isn't clicking consistently and the Giants are coming off a bye. They need to win to keep pace with SF for #2. Last thing you want is to get #3 and end up with Brees in the first round.
CUT CROSBY! In the interim GO FOR IT on 4th and 3 in opponent's territory. Kicking a FG was the worst option there. Absolutely horrific. And stop running for God's sake.
CUT MCCARTHY! Down 17 points they get down to the Giants 11. 3rd down and 1 do they even think about putting the ball in their best player's hands? Nope. Then the next best alternative would be to give the ball to one of their power backs, Kuhn or Starks right? Nope. Run up the gut with the 3rd down back, Alex Green. Then kick a FG on 4th and inches.
mccarthy costing team 2-3 pts in expectation per game. at the minimum. his only strength is he has reasonably well designed plays (but his calls are generally poorly timed). he is one of the league's worst strategicians

In my facebook feed I get the idiots riled up with comments like this.
They should make the playoffs, but unless Rodgers goes into Godgers mode, they can't get very far. The O-Line simply can't compete at a high level. They barely looked like a professional caliber unit. I didn't realize how much they depended on Bulaga.
I get that the Giants front four is GOAT, but teams who are supposed to be worse than the Packers seemed to survive against them. It looked like a college vs pro prop bet out there.
