Mauer signed a four-year, $33 million contract prior to the 2007 season. So, he won't be a free agent until after the 2010 season. Though, the Twins are certainly the type of team to trade away a big star in exchange for multiple prospects.

In 2011 season, Mauer will be 28 years old (turns 28 on 4/19/11).

Theo had better be preparing to fight for this guy.

Like I said, let's just focus on signing Victor Martinez.

Mauer got $184 million over 8 years from the Twins. That's $23 million per year. My gut says the Yankees, Red Sox, and others would have added quite a bit on top of that if Mauer had hit the free agent market.

Good to see him stick with the Twins even though I would have loved him in a Red Sox uniform.

maybe he gets like 26-27, but i can't imagine that he would get paid *that* much better to make it worth leaving his hometown.

and i agree 100% with Kevin's post.

We are lucky he stuck with the Twins. If he got free, the Yankees would have just outbid everybody.

pretty cool that we're gonna have beckett/lester/lackey/buchholz all long term. might be harder to find that cool in 3 years though

if daisuke is ****ed (and i can't tell if i should expect like 1.7 WAR the rest of his career or 3 WAR for this season) the depth is pretty ugly. the days of justin masterson as the #11 starter are long gone. i'll be pretty sad when michael bowden gets 17 starts this year. nobody in the minors looks like they can be a #6 starter by the end of 2011 except casey kelly, and he has work to do.

i guess this means we'll be linked to every SP on the trade market for the foreseeable future.
