Papelbon can become a free agent after the 2011 season.

According to Peter Gammons, the Sox and Jason Bay agreed to a four-year, $60 million deal last July. However, the Sox pulled out of the deal after an MRI.

It is evident, and Francona essentially admitted this, that Matsuzaka will not be ready for Opening Day. But with the days off in the schedule, the Red Sox can use a four-man rotation for two weeks until he is ready.
