Bethancourt just keeps improving every year. He's always had all the tools in the world but started off extremely raw and the Braves have always been pretty aggressive with him in terms of moving him up levels so he's kind of been a little over matched most of the time. He's still only 22.
With that said, after a very slow start at AAA this season he's hit .324/.351 over the last month with decent pop. Honestly, in another year or so this kid could be the #1 catching prospect in baseball and might just supplant El Oso out of sheer force of will by the end of 2015. I am not even kidding.
It's very possible, however, that he could be used as trade bait, which would make me a very sad panda. I feel like he's on the cusp of putting it all together, which is also why I wouldn't be happy if we just plugged him in as the backup C next season (Laird and Doumit will be gone). He needs as many reps as possible.
Also, from 2012-

If we can't keep McCann my money is on this guy to replace him. Not Bethancourt.
