I said he achieved great things, I did not say he lived a perfect life absent of any "evil." In fact no one lives a life absent of evil, that is an unrealistic abstraction. That being said, your response is unwarranted and totally pointless.

Additionally there are plenty of "Christians" that commit evil acts, so you basically don't even have a point worth thinking about. It's also worth noting that he did in fact free some slaves, so there is some redeeming quality there IMO. These days it's not like the average person feels too much remorse when we can buy a really nice piece of clothing for a cheap price at the expense of some child in a foreign country, working in substandard working conditions just to save a buck (sometimes you don't know it, but the average person certainly isn't proactive about it).

since Splendour has repeatedly defended slavery I assume she's pointing this out as a good thing about Jefferson.

On a related note- what splendour said doesn't really impact the post she responded to. I know that's normal for her and everyone else probably realizes it though I doubt she does.... maybe she can try to explain how what she posted is relevent. I mean... clearly he can have done great things and not set his slaves free. And I'm sure she realizes that most of the slave holders were christian, the trade was defended by many in the church using the same Biblical verses that Splendour has defended.... so that can't be the problem...

This post made me laugh a lot, hope you can figure out why.

Anyway, this thread died down a lot so I'm going to post something I wrote. They're hip hop lyrics to an instrumental, hopefully there are people here that can appreciate them.

(Yo guys you the center of attention
Yo girls you the center of attention) x2

Now check it
It's time to quote my man from London town
His name Shad, tour the country often outta town
But his sound keep it bumpin til the hope be found
And keep wise kids fly til they reachin Owen Sound
But check it, said it best with what he wrote in outta love
Talkin about the rhymes and rythm on how we love
Whassup? That affections in the air but we just don't see
Heck it's reflectin everywhere yet it just don't seem
To be believed by the youth of our yesteryear
Got they love in the air and talk they so sincere
But nearly miss a dissertation sigh remiss so clear
But take time for mindin the amounts into account, ya sound

(instrumental blends to hook)

Yo why'd I even try to get this rap thing going?
I'm just another writer who doesn't got no flow and it's showing
That persevering for a dream gets ya nothing
But headaches and the headshakes from people less creative than him

Him being the one guy that uhh you'd kinda wanna be ya know
If you didn't get shook everytime some guy doubted your flow
Doubted your style and how you're putting words together
I'll put a verse together but first under the weather's altogether

Against where I want this to go
So I think it's on me to ya know go and practice my flow
Unfortunately, I've never been one to practice yo
I'm more a sit on the couch kinda guy, I wish I could rap this

Rap how I got no style, no game, or no flame
Rap how my insides are dead and my outsides are the same
Rap how I got no shot at this like a snowball in hell
I'm freezing everytime attention swells, oh well

Yo remind me the first week we met
What'd you say when we had the chat about dreams and visions?
I thought you said that was only superstition
And paused when I said well then what's ambition

See girl I knew you had some intuition
To fish out the thoughts that I wanted on with you no doubt
I could tell you were smart just from how I felt
The first time you spoke about how life is hell

See Belle, under the shell you used to sell
I could tell easily that you had much more than
Stressed and depressed outlooks hooked up in that outlook
You took to look on this interesting world with

Remember I said Belle hun, why don't you work it?
...Yo? Why don't you work it?
Take it from myself ain't nobody perfect
Take it from myself those few things are worth it

Hope there are people getting this.

Yo to find truth you must not stop but keep learning
Words sound immaculate but brother keep searching
There's more than words read to find that thing called truth
You must anticipate experience, keep the beats on move

Cause the fiends en route, my son they seek on you
Not safe to catch your breath unless you got a piece on you
And if you got a piece on you brother, better be watching your step
Cause one step in the wrong way and you're bumpin with death

Bumpin dope beats in more hot seats than forty pounds speak

He even seek deep lines that flow sweet
Like ya girl misses sippy on a soul beat

Now console peeps cause the rap scene be his
Sorry now this games up go home to your kids

Can we please have a moment of silence
For all the kids lost in the world who still got parents beside em
Another one for the kids born with no hope or no guidance
Just the life to move with the sole will to survive it

Can we please have a moment of silence
For children that be messed with to death at school and go home to more violence
And find a kindness in messing they wrists up til torn up inside
Is enormously understating all the sores it implies

Atheism in particular is about hate. Hate for theists hate for people who don't agree with what they believe. Christians on the other hand love even those who disagree. They may not agree with atheists but they do respect them and treat them with love. Atheists however don't. It's not in the atheist code of conduct.

So I still plan on going to talk to the two muslims I met at the library again on thursday, does anyone have any advice for me?

I'm not trying to convert them, I just want to leave a good impression.

Ask them what they believe and why, and try to listen with an open mind.

Is this some kind of implicit rebuttal? It doesn't make any sense, if so. What is humorous about God not allowing his creations free will to choose him, but rather granting it to them selectively as a gift? We all understand what faith means right? And what a gift means? Right? This verse is not saying God chooses those who have faith in him. It is saying that he grants faith in him, and that you have no ability on your own to have faith in him.

Do you not understand that this verse means that you have no free will to choose Jesus? That only God grants that? And that your current faith is utterly useless because it may not be the "genuine" kind (as the verse states) given by God? That your faith can be false faith? That you could be a false Christian? And that all non Christians are as such just because God didn't grant them the "gift of faith"? And that you could well be in the same boat and not even know it?

Where is the funny in this? Where is the loving, supremely moral God with whom your faith in is paramount? If I were a Christian, I would be horrified at how inconsequential my faith in Christ is according to this verse right out of New Testament.

The best way is to show the image of Christ. But that is not easy when faced with a lot of difficulties. One has to be equipped with the "armor of God" which is having the word of God hidden in your heart. It is the best weapon against evil.
