Day 3 Part 3
It's off to Mizumi for an early dinner.
Unfortunately I didn't take any picks of the main courses; between trying to keep the kids in line and conversation I simply forgot. We order shrimp tempura (the usual 6/10), udon (7/10), various cuts of sashimi and sushi (anywhere from 6-7/10), bacon wrapped asparagus (6/10). My youngest son got a tuna hand roll which honestly was the best part of the whole meal (8/10). I have to start getting more hand rolls in the mix the next time I get Japanese.
I remembered to take pics by the time dessert came around.
Mochi ice cream sampler. I'm not a fan of mochi so I didn't try any.
Green tea ice cream. Easily an 8/10, there were berries on the bottom which went very well with the ice cream.
From there, we grab the limo to Bally's for the Bronx Wanderers.
I have honestly no idea what to expect. We simply wanted to try something new and non-cirque. The kids are into rock and music, and the show is described as "live 50s, 60s, 70s rock" so I figure how bad can it be. When we get to Bally's, we have some time to kill and hit some of the arcade games near the food court, including...
Fun game, and there's something super satisfying about being able to shoot multiple crossbow bolts into a zombie's head.
We've got good seats near the front.
The show... let's just say one should see it. It was a blast. They played tons of hits, in fact many from before my time but it was fun. Their stage presence is great and they really want the audience to get into the music. Being so close to the band, you can't help but get into the show. The story itself may be the best part of the show which I'll share here. Basically the band is a dad and his two kids. The dad grew up playing and loving music, and got a job at Columbia records right out of high school. He was on the production side so never got to play, but he learned a lot about the industry and ended up meeting quite a few musicians (eg Billy Joel). Eventually his kids graduated high school and he decided it was time to follow his dream of playing, as opposed to producing music.
So, he decides to form a band, and his kids join him. They've been touring for 16 yrs, and landed a gig in Vegas < 2 yrs ago. All their supporting cast were high school band mates of his sons- so basically this is a 60 yr old guy surrounded by his kids and his kids' friends. You can see the enthusiasm and love for music in the entire band- the dad is basically living his lifelong dream and you can tell he's just happy to be up there. And, they can PLAY. Clearly, if the music was garbage it wouldn't work.
He spices up the act by telling some stories from his time; one in particular illustrates just how lucky he knows he is. Apparently Wayne Newton was always his idol, and when they first came to Vegas Wayne came to their show, and said to the dad afterwards, "welcome to Vegas. You've made it". Later, as they became better friends Wayne told him a story about his handcuff bracelet. Frank Sinatra apparently had a bracelet that was half a handcuff. Wayne always wondered about it until one day Frank gave Wayne the other half, saying "now there are two bracelets in the world like this". That is, until Wayne made the dad one just like it, and said, "now there are three bracelets like this in the world. Frank's, mine, and yours". You could see the dad get choked up telling the story and I'll admit you couldn't help but be happy for him.
Other highlights- seeing the old crowd get into the music; the band calling out a woman who apparently saw them 3 NIGHTS IN A ROW, she loved them so much (that was her third night). The band calling out the few kids in the audience (including mine), saying how awesome it was that the next generation was getting into old school music.
Both my kids said it was their favorite show which I was shocked to hear, given they've never heard 90% of the songs. And, as a final bonus we got to meet and greet the band afterwards- got a pic which most of the band signed, all the members encouraged my kids to keep playing music (we play piano and guitar), AND they gave them free CDs. They really went out of their way to make sure the audience felt appreciated and it worked.
After, we head back to the Wynn. It's 10:30pm and the kids go to bed. My wife and I give Walking Dead 2 a try again, and again it's garbage. Yuck. We need to find another non-VP machine to play together bc Walking Dead 2 just isn't fun. She then heads to bed, and I try to recreate some of the magic from earlier in the day...

It was just COLD. Should have gone to bed, instead I think I dumped 3k which puts me at -1k for the day and -2k overall if you don't count the 10k I've given to my wife. What a disappointing end to an otherwise awesome day...
