I'll be there 5 nights(Wed-Mon) and staying where the room offers take me. Last couple trips with the family we've stayed at Sam's Town, which was completely adequate for what we needed and I really had no complaints other than nothing being within walking distance. I could stay there again all 5 nights but I also have a couple free nights available at the CET properties so I was looking at staying on the strip the first 2 nights before hopping over to Sam's or maybe Gold Coast for the other 3.
I'm mostly a pit gambler but since I'll be there 5 days and not rolled for 5 days of craps I'll definitely be mixing in some poker... mostly 1\2 2\5 type stuff with maybe a daily tournament or two. I'll probably check out Bellagio and Aria at some point since I've never been inside either and I don't mind a short walk. I do want to do some gambling at MGM properties so I can start getting room offers there as well for future trips with the family.
I'll be golfing a couple mornings, may spend some time at a pool, and hope to spend some time sweating US Open bets in a sports book. Fine dining options or over the top amenities aren't things I'm worried about or looking for. I'm sure anywhere will be "fine", but if I have offers at several places, might as well take the best one.
So with all that TMI out of the way, where would you suggest, and in what type of room? If this trip does indeed remain a solo one I'll probably give my first Vegas TR a go.
Sorry for the wall of text, and TIA.
You may want to check a couple threads in this forum, Favorite Casinos and Las Vegas Secrets, that could give you some ideas.
My recommendation for you is South Point. It is a really nice hotel, has plenty of good eating options from top notch steakhouse to a cheap hot dog stand. There are lots of useful amenities and they offer good value. The casino pit has lower minimums, and the poker room has some of the best daily tournaments in Vegas. They also have a pretty nice sports book.
I've made about 4 solo trips myself and each one included a stay or visit to SP.
