Pokercast Episode 330 - Matt Hawrilenko and Johnathan "Fatal1ty" Wendel Pokercast Episode 330 - Matt Hawrilenko and Johnathan "Fatal1ty" Wendel

God, Annie Duke's voice tilts the living **** out of me.

Hawrilenko interview segment was an interesting experiment, but IMHO quite a bit too long. I do like the "where are they now" thing.

Also really dug the hand analysis segment. More talking about hands please. If you can spend so much time talking to a psychology student and a 1st person shooter champ, you can definitely afford 5=10 minutes a show to talk about actual poker hands.

Keep going Adam, you're finding your groove and making it your own.

Skipped a lot of this weeks show. Was just plain boring, zero interest in listening to a gamer I've never heard about before either. MJ would never have let this show out.

Of course I know that he can back up the talk because he told me 82 times about all the things he won. Being really good at something and even a pioneer in an industry doesn't excuse someone from being a douche. A little humility would go a long way.

Enjoyed the show. Definitely wouldn't want a non-poker player every week, but for a once in a while thing it was interesting.

BTW, I'd say that Johnathan has a different view of luck vs. skill in gaming than a game developer would have. Here's a Richard Garfield (creator of MtG) talk on the subject

the balance of luck vs skill is a part of any game creation, and Garfield goes into some depth in the balance of the two and viewpoints of various kinds of players.

Oh, last week for swatting in Denver.

The gamer was incredibly composed. The chances of something horrible going wrong seem much better than 0%.

God damn that dude was ****. This guy was so narcissistic he made WCG look like a 2/90.

He could have been misrepresenting his accomplishments or phrasing them out of context. I wasn't defending how he acts, I was just comparing his accomplishment's to Hellmuth's to frame things in a poker context for people who aren't into eSports and aren't sure whether to believe him or think he's exaggerating.

Interesting how polarizing Johnathan is.

I guess I should be happy that it took three shows for someone to tell me I suck!

I think it's understandable that people didn't like my conversation with Matt. It was not originally intended to be for the PokerCast, and I definitely had my concerns that it wouldn't translate well. The PokerCast audience, under the excellent guidance of MJ and Adam over all the years, has clearly come to expect a clean, focused, and topical interview that's highly relevant to the poker world. But, that was never the intent with "Life After Poker", and I apologize if people feel like they were expecting one thing and got another.

It take it to mean the gamer guest was what sucked, not you. But I might not be reading enough into it.

Matt is totally one of us. TC, no complaints other than you didn't talk about his ATM conversation with Helmuth. Your chat was interesting.

I think we have found the Phil Helmuth of gaming. Fatal1ty sure loves to let you know about everything he's won and the records he holds. It was an interesting interview but a little off putting.

I felt like he brought up his accomplishments only when it was directly relevant to a a question about them and not all like Helmuth who will tell you ad nauseum how many poker World Championships he has won when he's referring to WSOP bracelets and has nothing to do with the question he has been asked.

I knew nothing about Fatal1ty before this interview and was impressed by how level headed he seemed for someone who has spent years playing video games.

It's not everyone's cup of tea , but it's much better to include stuff like this which is of great interest to some listeners . It's a simple matter of fast forwarding for those who don't much care for it.

You don't suck, think you're great. Choice of guests are a little stuffy at times. Just disappointed with this ep after a two week break. More known poker players, less people I have never heard of.

Begging for suggestions!

Also, we're moving our recording time to mid-day on Tuesdays which will allow for Europeans.

Since you had Brian Hastings (aka the bad guy) in the past, you could have Viktor Blom (aka the good guy) on.

I didn't think the gamer guy was too narcissistic tbh. He came across as a nice, sociable guy to me. Yes, he talked about his achievements without shame or bashfulness and this may piss some people off but it didn't seem like he was rubbing our faces in it, just telling us the tale of his success. I did actually really enjoy the interview and I really liked this episode. You could compare Fatality to Ivey in many ways I think, although Ivey was a funnier interview because of the legend that he is to the audience and Fatality is probably unknown to most of us (he was to me). The interesting thing though is that I don't remember people hating on Ivey.

BTW this is coming from someone who had to turn off the interviews with Marafioti and Helmuth because of their ego-maniacal bull****.

I thought the Fatality guy was a bit full of himself but it didn't ruin the interview for me.Some more direct tips on how to improve my Call of Duty K/D would have been good though

Also found the "Soulmate" v "Let's work on it" bit from the T Chan conversation with Matt fascinating and although the chat was a bit wandered at times I still really enjoyed listening to it.

I think people did like it, it just stood out slightly from the rest of the show but as you pointed out, it wasn't recorded for the Pokercast and:

- The tone changes because Adam isn't in there.
- You said you had edited it down.
- The context was highly personal due to your relationship with MH.

At the end of the day I think most people enjoyed it, or worse case scenario 'didn't mind it'. Originally I thought about skipping it, but after about 3-4 minutes I was interested in listening to the duration.

Keep up the good work.

I'd love to hear some edgier 'where are they now' like Stoxtrader and other folks that disappeared for nefarious reasons, but I can't see them agreeing.

I liked the discussion at the very end about approaching being a beginner as an opportunity to learn instead of evidence that you suck.

I didn't mind it too much. All the hate reminds me of this dialog from "Searching for Bobby Fischer":

He's better at this than I've ever been at anything in my life. He's better at this than you'll ever be, at anything. My son has a gift. He has a gift, and when you acknowledge that, then maybe we will have something to talk about.

Thought Adam and Terrance worked excellently together - By far and away the best since MJ left. Some of this is down to Adam getting his feet in his new role but thought Terrance was excellent as co-host (hope he takes the role full time?)

I know Adam is not a tourney player, but was frustrated with the tourney segment, where the tournaments were mentioned, but not the results. Not sure if the results were in but the 100k one with the issues with paying 2 or 3, resulted in Scott Seiver getting third, when only wanting 2 to be paid - so would have been good to mention this?

Not interested in gaming, but found the interview interesting and can see poker going down some of these routes, esp with streaming?

As to Steve D point, can see online tourneys FT streamed with hold cards (say WCOOP FT) with a delay - if you can do EPT with 1 hr delay, why not 20 mins for online with commentary, as online is normally 3x faster than live this should not cause a problem?

I thought the show was great. The Matt interview was a solid B+ and the Fatal1ty interview was a C, but Adam and TC really work well with each other, A+ for that bit.

Keep up the good work Adam and don't let the haters get to you..

Thanks for the feedback! FWIW, the non-edited full version is at http://lifeafterpoker.libsyn.com/lif...att-hawrilenko

At the bottom I've pointed out the parts you might have already listened to by virtue of having listened to the PokerCast.
