i think he is saying that rider coaches people to play more of a LAG game and those people then like to emphasize how LAG they play rather then focusing on trying to win

and coordi is always a dick for no reason, need to go read most of his posts. Always getting put in friend zone with the young girls iirc

meh its not a brag. i do focus on winning. i just havent seen anyone run at my stats so i was saying it was another way to recognize me. its more an experiment to see how light i can get people to stack to me without bustoing my roll.

A little confusing...

1 and 2) It sounds like they want to replace the compressor and recharge the coolant. The coolant recharge is about 80$ worth of materials and very little time in labor. Compressors are expensive, but the confusing part is...
3) If they're replacing your entire outside unit, wtf are they replacing the compressor on the old one for? This makes no sense to me. It almost sounds like they're trying to sell you the unit and compressor separately...

5 and 6) I've never actually replaced or installed duct work or anything like that, but it couldnt be that expensive. Also, WTF with charging you 2k$ worth of warranty on a max of 6k worth of parts/labor.

7) 12k upfront? WTFFFF

-The 6k worth of work to begin with is shady.
-Then they jack you with 2k worth of warranties to bring it up to 8k
-8k somehow becomes 9k (tax or some bs? probably other BS fees they made up)
-9k becomes 12k up front

Make sure you still have your wallet dude, these guys are ****in crooks.

get multiple quotes

see if someone you know knows someone in the business

9K for a whole new AC system sounds about right installed with duct work, but whether you actually need this or not is another story.
10-07-2009 , 06:31 PM
yea 12k is like marble and tile for your kitchent with new cabinets and utilities
10-07-2009 , 06:52 PM
As a side note, my mother in law had her AC break while it was under warranty.

When they came out to fix it, they left her a 400something repair bill.

"Warranty Fee"
"Installation Fee"
"Blow torch fee" *thats right, they charged her to use their own tool on your covered repair.

Warranties are often BS, and the fact that they're trying to sign you up for 2k worth of warranties is mega shady.

*disclaimer - these people may very well be honest and you may have a major repair on your hands. I'm biased because I've been in this situation a lot, and have not found 1 person who is halfway honest. At the very least get more estimates.

*edit*
When you are getting more estimates, dont mention any of the previous companies that you've had out, or their prices.
If you tell someone "Joe's AC wants to charge me 9k for this job!!"
You'll get a very friendly "Oh no, thats terrible pricing, I could do this whole thing for 7 and save you 2k!" response, whether or not you need it.

I say not to mention the companies either, because they all usually know of eachother and how their businesses are run. Joe's AC may be known for huge over-pricing, so when Jim's comes out to do an estimate, they'll know that all they need is to undercut Joe.

I know its hot and all but you are getting ripped off get some other quotes and anyone trying to sell you a unit for more than 4k for a 1500sq ft house is prob not a person I would deal with. I know prices are differnt in differnt parts of the country but it shouldnt more than this and I would not be suprised at all if you came back tomarrow and said someone quoted you one for like 3200.

As well I can tell a HVAC guy wouldnt get 12k for installing a unit in a new house and that would include running the duct work and every thing. You already have that all he needs to do is bring it in remove the old one and hook up the new one.

They contractor is marking up the price of the unit to screw you and all the other stuff hes doing is probably pretty shady as well.

Belok,

I also would find a new contractor if I were you charging someone a blow torch fee lol. I'm assuming he used a little blue bottle???? if so thats map gas which plumbers and anyone else that needs to join copper pipe uses this can be bought at lowes for like 5-10$ max and botle of it probably last him quite a few jobs. Most contractors do not charge for thing slike this as they generaly get more than one use out of it and its figured into theri hourly.

edit: I just noticed he is putting a duct into your ceiling? Why? do you not have hot and cold air returns in that room ????? If so why would he put another set in???????? adding in more duct work just seems like more owrk for him to do hence more labor he can charge and he makes more money. Also the unit should come with a factory warranty.

The example I used was my mother-in-law. She ended up just paying the bill. I dont know if they even used a blow torch.

I do know that the warranty fee was something like 120$. A 120$ fee to make use of the warranty she already paid for.

Yup, Joe's AC company was trying to sell him additional coverage, which probably included wonderful things like blow torch fees

ya it sounds like a total crock of **** charging people a warranty fee on a warranty they already paid for.

I have a few friends who are contractors and unfortuantly its part of the business. They will try to screw you and most are all the same. I can tell you this as someone whos been around this type of business all his life...........the more they are telling you they like you and are giving you a good deal etc........ the more hes ****ing you.

Any good contractor can spot someone who has no idea what hes telling you before he even says the first word to you.

Chip,

a good trick to use with these guys is telling them how broke you are and that you have no idea where you will come up with the money like I mean as soon as he walks up to the door to meet you start lalying on the OMG'S and what am I gonna do's right away so he knows up front you are broke.

I would say some thing along the lines of for 12k I will go to wally world and get 2 120$ window units and call it good. I support my old grandmother and shes doing really bad I work 2 jobs just to pay the bills and buy her med's etc...... You have to lay a bigger hard luck story on him than hes trying to lay on you. Once he realizes you dont have any money or aint gonna pay it you will get closer to his actual price. Remember he does want your work so he isnt gonna shrug his shoulders and walk away he knows you can call someone else and sooner or later you will find someone willing to do it for what you want to pay. Also I would be very careful of handing ANY contractor 12k for a 9k job with the promise that he will give you 3k back this sounds like a huge scam job to me.
