now stop imagining and perform some finite element analysis and get me bending and shear diagrams so I won't fail senior design.

senior design is all about picking a group with people much more motivated than you are so that they do the work and you pass and graduate

In 2010, will there still be monthly chat threads... or should we consider a yearly chat thread (or even just a permanent one)?

8 minutes....I'm not fast by any stretch and would be thrilled with a marathon time of <4 hours, but I'm not sure that's gonna happen. I've been watching the Kona Ironman on TV and it looks sick, insanely difficult, potentially shattering...so of course, I wanna do it, but I think I'd need like 2-3 years to train...especially sick I suck ass on a bike. lol

The 2.2 mile swim in the washing machine with the 2.5 foot tall white cap waves is what would be most difficult I think. Swimming in open water is so much more difficult than swimming laps in the pool. I used to swim 1.5 miles over lunch in an indoor pool and it was much much different than swimming in even an outdoor pool. That kona swim would be really tough.

yah i got real lucky with this... i don't do a ton of work, just run the website and organize stuff. basically doing the boring monotonous stuff while the rest of my group actually uses stuff they've learned.

i'm an awesome engineer

Mike what do you feel is the biggest difference between the outdoor and indoor swimming? I know that in an event like that, I'd be paranoid about getting kicked in the face or something.

Well, The waves make it difficult to breath like you normally do, so you have to adjust that. If you do manage to get off by yourself a bit then you have to check your line of sight to make sure you are going the right direction. (there aren't any lines on the bottom of the lake or ocean to guide you.) It wouldn't be a problem in Kona I don't think, but the pool I swam in was a very relaxing temperature, when I swam outdoors the water was cold and it constricted my chest and made swimming at my normal pace really difficult. If you are going to do an ironman, I would recommend investing in one of those body suits that provide warmth and a bit of buoyancy.

dude, <4 hours is like averaging a 9 minute mile the whole race. That sounds pretty tough.
I've gotten my daily run up to 7 miles, and my goal is just to do it under 70 minutes; if I kept that pace the whole time it'd be like 4 1/3 hours. I take 10 minutes to get up to speed, so that brings the average down, but I'm sure running an additional 20 miles will bring my average mile down too

I've never done one, but I'd be happy just to be under 5 hours. I'm assuming bathroom/stretching breaks are standard?

edit: HOLY CRAP just looked up the record, its almost under 2 hours. That means the dude averaged faster than 5 minute miles for an entire marathon!!!

Yeah I want to run a marathon someday soon. When I was in good shape in HS I ran it in just over 5 minutes, now doubt I could run it in much under 7.
10-13-2009 , 07:40 AM
wow 5 min marathon!
10-13-2009 , 10:09 AM
I ran about a 5:15 mile in highschool. 12 minute 2mile 19 minute 5k.

It's just so dang hard on your knees as an exercise.

Seriously thinking about joining Team in Training for Triathlon racing. Anyone ever run or triathlon with them? I like the idea of raising money to help fight lymphoma and leukemia, but they seem a bit culty to me. LOL

People spend tens of thousands of dollars on vehicles, and their #1 criteria are external looks/appeal. One day a company will come out with a generic engine/frame and people can just pick and choose from the exterior shell. Thats all cars are, fancy shells attached to expensive components.

I don't own a car BTW.

1 billion starving people on the planet, and our government arrests people for interweb pokes.

http://www.tennessean.com/article/20...0301/91008066/
A Hendersonville woman was arrested for virtually “poking” someone on the social networking site Facebook. Shannon D. Jackson, 36, was arrested Friday, Sept. 25 for allegedly violating an order of protection.

Jackson is accused of using the “poke” option on Facebook to contact a Hendersonville woman, thus violating the terms of the order of protection, which stipulates “no telephoning, contacting or otherwise communicating with the petitioner.”

Violators can be punished with up to 11 months, 29 days in jail and a possible fine of up to $2,500.
