"The weekend of 50 three putts"
Friday: 86 at
Hemlock Golf Club in Ludington, MI. First time I'd played there. Nice course - very generous landing areas, especially on the front nine, GREAT greens. I couldn't believe how fast they were and rolled several putts way past on the front. A nice warmup for the main event:
85 at
Arcadia Bluffs in Arcadia, MI.
Wow. First time I've played it and it instantly goes to the top of the list of the most visually arresting courses I've ever seen - ahead of Augusta (granted that I haven't played or seen Pebble Beach, Cypress Point, Old Head or a lot of others, but still ...)
Just incredible, and yet fair - you could generally see where you were going and good shots were rewarded, not punished. There was a steady 25-30 mph wind when we played, plus a hole or so of rain, so conditions were not exactly easy.
I'd like to go back sometime and just take pictures. I took a few but not nearly enough.

Tullymore, Stanwood, MI. Second time I've played Tullymore and honestly, I don't get it. It's ranked in the top 100 courses in the U.S. by Golf Digest (#90) and I don't know why. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice course. They have nice facilities. The course was in very good shape. It just doesn't feel *great*.
85 at St. Ives, Stanwood, MI. Another nice course with lots of elevation changes. Played behind a group of drunken yahoos who wouldn't let anyone through - five and a half hours when you're on your fourth 18 of the weekend isn't as much fun.
Sunday: 86 at my home course. Tired.
Playing on the road is tough. I had
incredible ball striking days on both Friday and Saturday, especially so on Friday. I hardly can recall missing a fairway. Hit a ton of greens. I lost one ball - where I hit one flush at the flag and we never found it.
I had a raft of birdie putts inside ten feet all weekend and I made exactly ZERO before today. I did three putt several times from inside ten. Aargh. After 87 holes and what seemed like 50 three putts, I did make a birdie - a super difficult downhill slider at my home course.
Arcadia at the twilight rate of $110 was clearly the winner. Hemlock was a bit overpriced at $79 - which is probably why we basically had the course to ourselves on a Friday morning. None of us felt that Tullymore ($140) or St. Ives ($110) was worth the premium price.
