Congrats but your back 9 score doesn't add up at all (unless par was 38?)

Thanks, yea I just reread it and noticed I messed up 12 and 15.

12 I doubled, and 15 I tripled.
Back nine went:
Par, Birdie, Double, Par, Bog, Triple, Par, par, Bog

56-56-112 at Pontchartrain Park.

It's a new (well, rebuilt after Katrina) course that opened a couple of weeks ago. In very good shape, but still getting the kinks worked out. (No water coolers on the course, for example. 150 stakes in the fairway, but nothing else to help with distance.) Also, there are some odd things about the course IMO. It's a par-72 with 4 sets of tee boxes: tips at 6854, whites at 6380, golds at 5714, reds at 5321. Seems odd to have a 650-yard gap between the middle two sets of tees. If I'm playing a par-72 I usually look for something in the 5900-6100 range, and instead I ended up playing the longest course I'd ever played. Another annoying thing was that most of the greens were separated from the fairways; there was usually 10-20 yards of rough in between the end of the fairway and the front of the green, making it harder to play shots into the green with longer clubs.

Didn't play great, but not terrible at an unfamiliar course. Averaged 220+ off the tee, but had a few too many erratic slices. Didn't make many putts. On the plus side, I had a bunch of nice half-wedges into greens, which was especially good considering I had no idea of the distances on most of those shots.

47-53-100

Drove it awesome on the front, then topped or snap hooked most of my drives on the back. No GIR despite having a ton of wedges/short irons into greens. Highlight of the day was a par-3 where I topped an 8-iron off the tee leaving me about 90 yards out. Hit a lob wedge to 18 inches and made that for par. Also managed to par the last hole of the day to score an even 100.

Barring a bunch of terrible rounds between now and Dec. 31st, my handicap will be under 30 at the next revision. Got it down to 29.7 based on today's round.

Brag: did I mention it was 75 degrees today?

88 on pretty easy course. 3 triples on front 9. bogey or better last 11 holes.

it's crazy but i feel like i need to groove my swing every time out. how do i overcome this?

good: chipping, pitching (thank you phil mickelson, reading his book), driving later on. par 3 tee shos. amazing fairway bunker shot, FW woods

ok: lag putting, but too many lags from in closer. only one bad 3 putt.

bad: no putts outside 4 or 5 feet, fairway irons too loose, driving early on

work on: everything needs some work. consol short game improve, square putts, teeing off less than driver

Shot 81 two weeks in a row at Torrey Pines North Course (both 40-41) after not having played in close to 6 months. First round I took 39 putts, including 5 3-putts. Second round 34 putts including 2 3-putts.

Have probably never hit the ball better from tee to green, but my lag putting...

89 (46+43) for 39 Stablford round West middlesex GC.

1 Birdie, 2 Pars, 10 Bogeys, 4 Doubles, 1 worse.

4/12 FIR, 1/18 GIR, 32 Putts.

I'm absolutely made up. It was the first time I have broken 90 round West mid and the first time in a couple of years I have broken 90 anywhere. I didn't think I was in contention to brake 90 especially after screwing up the 16th with a seven and only found out when we totted the scores up after the round.
To make it even better I got my first par of the round on the sixth the hole I had lost a ball on and failed to score points on the last five rounds.

No score returned 31 Stablford points

1 Par, 10 Bogeys, 5 Doubles, 2 Worse.

4/12 FIR, 0 GIR, 35 Putts from 17 greens.

I should have returned a score but had a brain fart and forgot I could declare my ball unplayable for a two club length drop and hacked at it then picked up instead.
There wasn't too much difference between this round and the last except this time nothing dropped for me. Driving is a bit shaky, Irons are poor, chipping and pitching is acceptable, once again fairway woods seemed easier to hit then a seven iron.

80/80 last 2 days at pebble beach. First day I shot 38-42. 2nd day I shot 37-43. 2nd day was like 50 degrees and windy. Both from the 6850 74.8 rated blue tees.

The back 9 was playing straight into the wind (except for 10) and really has a lot more teeth than you'd think. Greens are rolling about the same speed as when they play the ATT there in February (so say the caddies) and there are a few ridiculous slopes that make putting a challenge. The real defense of the course is in the wind and the greens.

18 has a ridiculously hard tee shot that you don't really see on 18. OB right is in play, water left. I hit it in the water left both days.

Probably the prettiest course I've ever played. Not sure if it's my favorite ever in terms of the actual course, but it's pretty close.

Playing spyglass tomorrow, then Spanish Bay on Thursday. Good week!

I had my best 6 hole stretch ever. birdie birdie eagle bogey(3 putt) par birdie. 31 (-4) on the back 9 (didn't play full 18). It's so fun when everything clicks except then I get my expectations too high.

55-49-104 (par 70)
51-49-100 (par 71)

Weather was warmer than I expected (55-60F) so I got to play with my new burner plus irons. Those things are ridiculously long and high. Probably 15-20 yards longer than my old clubs. I hit a couple 7 irons 170-180, a PW about 140ish. Gonna take some getting used to.

First round was pretty blah, no blow-up holes but terrible short game. 38 putts and a bunch of chunked/skulled pitches led to 5 triple bogies. 2nd round I had the short game going pretty well. 2 nice pitches to within 3 feet to get up-and-down for par, 32 putts (plus a couple from the fringe). Would've been an even better round had it not been for a 10 and a 9 on two of the par-4s. Had 5 pars, and all of them were on par-4 or par-5 holes.

Played the par-5s pretty well during the two rounds (by my standards): one par, one bogey, 3 doubles (including a 3 putt and two penalty strokes). It really helped me to have irons that are so much longer on the par-5s. Drove the ball erratically yet again. Was hitting a draw on the range, went with that to start off, then started fading/slicing it about nine holes in. Went with that for a while, then started missing both directions. Played the last couple holes with sort of a 3/4 swing that stayed pretty straight and was getting out to the 230-240 range. May have to try working with that a bit more.

Decently challenging course in central TX... lots of hilly terrain, and the back 9 felt like playing in the middle of a forest.

I shot a 69 today. This is significant because my regular group has a pool for breaking 70 that was up to $90. My home course is pretty short, so shooting around par is not real difficult, but any round in the 60s is pretty cool.

Played 81 holes in the last three days. Yay for vacation time and good weather (I was wearing shorts today).

Thursday:
53 (par 35)
44-47-91 (par 67)

Friday:
51-50-101 (par 70)
48-58-106 (par 70)

Saturday:
45-41-86 (par 67)

Highlight was on Friday when I had 2 birdies in a 3-hole stretch to start off the back nine of my first round. Gap wedge from the fairway to 3 feet, sink the putt; then a chip-in from the front fringe two holes later. Unfortunately I played like crap the rest of the back nine and blew a good chance to break 100.

This means my handicap will be down to 27.6.

My golf game in a nutshell: On my last 9 holes, I was putting for birdie on all 9 holes, and I shot 41 and didn't make a birdie. Then on the front 9, I played fine, but decided to hit 3 shots out of a bunker and make a 7 on a par 3. I want to say my putting was bad, but I hit a lot of good ones that didn't go in, and most of them were just really hard.

The other day I did have a 4 putt...and a FIVE PUTT (it was from the fringe, but it was not a difficult spot at all, so I'm counting it) in the same round.

#10, 451 yds: drive down middle/7 iron chunked short fringe, putt way too long, missed 12 footer coming back barely.

#11, 550 yds: drive down middle, thought was good 5 wood into "hazard" punch 8 iron through trees to 30 feet, putt 3 feet offline, a little too hard, missed 4 footer badly.

#12: 175 yds: 5 iron to ~12 feet, lip out putt, par.

#13: 450 yds: Driver down middle to 170, 3 iron to back fringe, 20 feet, putt ~10 feet past. made par.

#14: 380 yds: Driver into wind down middle. Smash a 3 iron from 174 to 6 feet. Lip out putt, par.

#15: 236 yds: Driver into wind perfect, 30 feet short. lag to 3 inches, par.

#16: 290 yds: Driver into wind perfect, wedge from 85 pin high left, putt impossibly down hill goes 15 feet past, barely miss that. bogey.

#17: 540 yds: Driver down the middle into wind, 3 wood to 100 yards, perfect wedge short on fringe maybe 25 feet, run it by 7 feet, burn edge, bogey.

#18: 346 yards: Driver pulled left horribly, ends up barely off fairway. 5 iron from 136 into wind smashed right at the pin....and 50 feet short. Comical putt-putt goes 12 feet past, barely miss comebacker bogey.

Awesome!!

94 for 34 Stableford

1 Par, 11 Bogeys, 4 Doubles, 2 Worse.

2/12 FIR, 3 GIR, 37 Putts.

I was definitely cutting across the ball and was hitting it high short and left to right but I kept it in play and chipped and pitched acceptably. I should have scored much better but I missed 9 short flat putts. I also throw away shots on the eleventh by not taking half a minute to go and get the right club because I new there were people behind us on the tee.

Got out yesterday for first time in 5 months. Played 9 holes in cold, windy (2 club), and completely soggy conditions. Standing water on various parts of the course.

Did pretty well though, wanted to see how my new 10-finger tee shot grip would hold up on an actual course and it went very well. Results were just insanely better with this grip than my old interlock (in before "interlock barf"). Drives were probably all over 230 and 6 of 7 were just off the fairway. 1 drive was bad.

Anyway it's an easy course rating, from the back tees it's like 33.6/111 or something laughable. Shot a 47.

20 putts
1 par
6 bogeys
1 double
1 triple
1 sand stroke from a fairway bunker
0 penalty
2 GIR!

28.3 HC for reference

Putting was atrocious, especially with the soaked greens. Only one of my first putts went past the hole. Even when I thought I was compensating for the super slow greens I still wasn't getting it there.

Lob wedge was bad, lost a lot of touch on that. Not surprising.

Other irons were generally better than they used to be. I'm getting more over the ball in my stance and I think this is helping. I'm pretty sure I used to be way too upright on my iron shots.

3 best shots of the day:

7I 147 yards to pin high, 16' left of the pin, through a direct side wind.

25' birdie putt that rolled an inch under the pin and settled 18" beyond the hole. That one would have felt good....That was a Jason Day style knee buckler.

Attempted my first draw, as it was basically a necessity. Was behind a bush that I had just enough room to go right of but up just right of the green was a bunker I didn't want to land in. Was my approach shot on a par 4 with a SW. Gave it a whack and somehow it did exactly what I was trying for and hooked just enough to land left of the bunker and roll nicely onto the green. Was lower trajectory than I wanted though.

May get out again tomorrow.

The plan was to play a lot more once it got cooler but I started sucking and got mad and just stopped.

Yesterday was miserable (though I'm a northerner so it didn't bother me) but was basically Open Championship conditions and then some. Kinda fun actually. Also fun that only 2 other guys were on the entire course.

Had I waited one more day and gone today it would have been clear, sunny, no wind and 70s. I bet it was packed though. Will try to play tomorrow.

If I was a big golf nut I think living up North would drive me insane. Don't know how y'all deal.

It looks like all the rounds logged on oobgolf are in Texas and Louisiana right now. Heh.

If you can legitimately shoot under 105 at a par-72 you are far from being the least talented golfer ever. It's just that most of the people who are worse than you either a) shave strokes from their score or b) don't post on internet message boards.

I lose my strokes to a god-awful long game. My chief misses are fat (ground before ball), inexplicable low ball flight (possibly thin but doesnt feel like it). Mainly my distance control is very very poor. Directional control is much better for irons although a lot of my shots have been leaking slightly right. My driver is all over the map currently as well directionally, big misses on both sides. And as far as I can tell im not manipulating anything so im not sure why im having such big misses with my driver. I do notice that when my arms get ahead of my lower body the ball tends to go left and when my lower body gets to far ahead of my arms the ball tends to go right, but beyond that not sure.
