The funny thing about the 18 hole Monday playoff is that I've never heard a single person say that they like it. Honestly, is there anyone out there who is actually in favor of a full 18 on Monday morning as opposed to getting it over and done with on Sunday?

Assuming the answer is no, why the **** does the USGA insist on keeping this lame tradition.

I mean, does everything need to be catered to TV?

I prefer Sunday closure too. But still, I at least understand.

Don't pat too hard. Those were the top three guys yesterday (just switched 2nd and 3rd) and Tiger hasn't won yet!

Its not about TV, I'm off tomorrow and will watch it either live or with a slight delay. Too bad I'm about 3% as excited about it as I was when I turned on my TV this afternoon.

Its about being a fan and wanting closure, wanting to see Tiger and Rocco continue to play until 1 man stands after the grueling day they've both already put in. What about the fans who were there today and have to go back to work in their boring offices tomorrow, I wonder what they think of the playoff format?

Its just so anti-climactic to watch such drama unfold on Sunday and then tell both guys to sleep on it and come back in the morning for another 4 hour round. No fan in their right mind wouldn't have rathered they kept Rocco and Tiger on the course for extra holes tonight.

I like it. It certainly is better than the sudden death playoff. Why not let them earn it over 18 holes, with time to prepare and rest? Immediate playoffs irritate me usually because the two players usually have had different times to wait. Some players have to sit around and may get tight, or may actually have an advantage if they can go to the range and keep warm/iron out their swing. The later player has to go straight to the playoff which may or may not be good depending on how well he played the last few holes. An 18 hole playoff the next day puts them on equal ground. I don't care about how good the coverage is or the viewing public (although I think it should be played later tomorrow for that reason). It's about providing the best format to pick a winner.

Anybody know what the ticket situation for the playoff is?

I understand gates open at 7am, but I could not find out anything on USGA site if/where tickets are to be sold.

am I the only one that thinks they are both winners and should share the title?

lol, serious question: what happens if they're tied at 18? sudden death?

QFT. Just imagine if like the the Lakers game went to overtime tonight and they told everyone to come back tomorrow..."uhh we know only about 10% of you will show up, but we have decided to play the OT at 9am tomorrow morning!!"

Yes. Last happened in '94, when Els defeated Loren Roberts in the sudden death playoff.

It's all about the aloofness of the USGA. The universe revolves around David Fay if you did not already know...

If Tiger sprays on Monday like he did this weekend, he won't win.

+1

Also golf courses are 18 holes, not 4 holes or 1 hole. It is meant to be a complete test, and by picking 4 holes or some series of holes for sudden death isn't the same test as playing the whole course. So if you are the USGA and you can get away with it, why not play another round in case of a tie?

pretty much agree here...the 2 eagles and luck in chip shot is basically what has kept him in the playoff.....during the middle stretch of the 4th round he was really playing solid, hit 9 perfect shots as Johnny Miller said.

If it meant the NBA could sell more tickets/concessions at the overtime, then they would do it...so dont give them any ideas.

I like the Monday playoff. I would also like it if it switched to match play for the playoff. That said, I also like the British 4-hole playoff.

Most, if not all, tour events charge nothing for spectators on a Monday finish. Plus I can't see how tickets would be sold and certainly have not already been sold.

So if they're tied at the end of tomorrow you favor another 18-hole playoff on Tues.? Ad infinitum?

Am I the only one that wishes Tiger had a little more Barry Sanders in him?

The guy's amazing, and I tend to like juggernauts, but I just don't find myself rooting for him the same way I do Roger Federer.

Sure, why not? Do you really think it's going to happen that often? And if it does, great! I get to watch a whole Tuesday afternoon of edge of your seat U.S. Open match play playoff fricking golf instead of Around the Horn, MSNBC election coverage, local news, or whatever other mind-numbing treacle I'd otherwise be intaking (disclaimer: I'm blessed/cursed enough to be able to watch TV at work- if you're not, Tivo is your friend). IOW, what's the problem??

The problem is a) we can't all watch at work, b) it's pretty tough to not find out all day what happened, kinda have to avoid large chunks of the internet, c) by tomorrow I don't even care that much about something that had me riveted in my seat today. There's a reason why people don't generally watch 90% of a movie, then go to bed and finish up the cliffhanger ending the next day.

Everyone seems really down on the 18 hole idea and I understand the complaints.

But think of how epic and awesome it could be. Rocco starts out hot, Tiger falls behind by 4 strokes after 6. He can barely stand, walk, or swing the club because he's in so much pain.

Then Tiger, in a heroic scene that will become legendary, hobbles the course on one leg and battles down the stretch showing amazing heart before an eagle on 18 to win.

It would be so amazing.
