Ernie is a proven loser in these spots. Woody, however, has the attitude to actually suck it up and make meaningful shots.

/caps lock

One of the more memorable Ernie gags I remember is the 2002 British, which he actually went on to win. He was playing against a bunch of nobodies and did everything he could to choke and hand it to one of those randoms. Kinda pathetic IMO.

I think that had less to do with him stepping up than everyone else stepping back. And none of them (Maggert, Monty, Lehman) had a reputation as being a clutch player. Quite the opposite with all three guys, actually.

Well, it is. It's a stupid statement but...he either mishit the putt OR he it is well but something threw it off line.

You remember poorly. He was very solid. Monty played very well also, bit of weirdness late, ofc. Ernie since has turned into a something of a basket case mentally, but that doesn't diminish what he has accomplished.

You're right, it's all just an act.

I dunno, just wanted to go to the pool for a bit. Checked out the scores in the fitness center and realized it was time to come back

And that's the one exception. He was the first guy I can think of on tour to totally and publicly capitulate to Tiger by basically saying Tiger's the best and he had to hope Tiger played bad to beat him. Phil, as much as I dislike him and his awww shucks attitude, never came close to anything that gross. Even his comments earlier in the week to the effect of "I understand why you people at home think it's over", just reeked of fear, despite his bravado that he himself was still trying.

It would be better to post this on a day when he wasn't having the best round of any player on the course.

Yet every time he got close enough to actually be a threat at the time, he missed short puts or routine shots. Like I said earlier, he's expert at finishing 2nd to Tiger. Like, duh, you obviously have to play decent to do that.

I don't care enough to look up that scorecard, but I remember that tournament well. All four of those guys were in contention with four holes to play and only Els didn't gay it up. Maggert had a double bogey on 16 IIRC, Monty had a weaksauce bogey in there, and we all remember Lehman's adventures with the pond on 17.

Ernie had solid shot values to be sure, but I see that more as I've already stated - he plugged along with pars, nothing spectacular, while everyone else fell by the wayside.

Plugging away with pars down the stretch to keep the pressure on your opponents and to win a US Open on Sunday-- nothing spectacular. Okay.
