I count 28 guys with no fedex points, and points are counted down to 246th.

If Wie ever wanted to make a cut in a PGA event, this is the tournament.

Prediction: If Wie makes the cut, Marc Ecko buys the tournament and brands an asterisk on it.

Wei makes the turn at an even 36 (bogeys #1 and #5, birdies #6 and #9). Looks like most of us are way off in our predictions. The girl can play!

Looks like she played solid today. Now for the hard part...lets see if she can sign a scorecard.

I bet she has a squad in there with her. Charlie Wie supervising everything, the caddie with the calculator...

wow, that's pretty impressive...

looks like we were all very high on our guesses.

i think there's been a thought amongst a bunch of people (not this forum) that she could never play, that all she was was a prospect. but this girl could flat out play a few years ago. i just thought she'd never get back there and i don't a few rounds gets her back there, but it's pretty encouraging. maybe she needed the motivation/focus of the LPGA comments this week.

Reminds me of the comedian who talked about when he won the lottery, he wouldn't be like all of the idiots who decided to keep their jobs after they won. His press conference would start out similar to how Wie's would if she made the cut, ::: clears throat:::, "The following people can now officially kiss my ass."

Remember when she only needed to finish +1 over the last 6 holes to qualify for the US Open? That, and missing Sony cut by one shot were her primetime moments. She obviously has been getting her game back into shape after 2 disgusting years.

Not that I think it's a good idea to play against the men, because she yet has learned to win. At her best she should basically tee it up for fun on the LPGA, unless the courses are tricked up to equalize the field (e.g. 250 yard forced layups on par 5s).

i don't particularly care one way or the other, but I enjoy the 45 predictions of terrible scores only to see her go out and play pretty decently. I am not saying you guys, but it seems there are a lot of people in the golf world who need to figure out it is 2008and some women are actually good at things. I just hope she beats John Riegger.

There is no doubt she is the most talented (in terms of potential) female to ever play the game. She might one day be capable of playing full time on the PGA tour. What I want to see her do, if that is her intention, is to tee it up at Q-School like everyone else at her level has to and see if she's good enough. There's no way she's good enough at this point to make enough money from 7 sponsors invites to get her card that way. So this whole exercise is just good/bad viewing, depending on your point of view.

I wish she would go full time on the LPGA. I hope she succeeds there, I hope she dominates there, although Creamer and Ochoa would be better than her right now.
Then if she really is starved for competition she knows where to find the challenge.

I'll be pulling for her to shoot a couple under and make the cut tomorrow, she has every chance in the morning to do just that.

WTF? Most talented female to ever play the game? Have you lost your mind?

She has never won anything on either tour. She is playing against the weakest field of the year on the mens tour right now.

Why does everyone insist on saying she is great and will be awesome because she has so much potential.

So what? She has yet to prove that she can compete on any professional tour. She has been spoon fed invites and given every possible opportunity to show she can hack it, and she fails time after time.

Get rid of this clown until she qualifies and wins events like anyone else.

The part you bolded I stand by 100%. I even said Ochoa and Creamer are better right now, Sorenstam it goes without saying. As far as I can tell you said pretty much what I said, just added the raving lunacy.

Distance with driver: Wie >> any other professional LPGA golfer
Distance with irons: Wie >> any other professional LPGA golfer
Ability to play tournament golf: Wie << top LPGA golfers

The fact that Ochoa, et al are winning while Wie has not does not mean Wie is not more talented. It is pretty much a given from most astute observers that from day 1 Wie was another entity that no other woman golfer ever approached, including Ochoa.

Now, with that in mind Wie needs to learn how to win on the LPGA tour. Forget about PGA tour, that is a pointless exercise that just distracts from how she will ultimately be ranked against her competition.

LPGA tour courses average 6,200 yards, with many holes setup such that a 285 yard drive (which Wie averages) is effectively useless. This is done to let the 220 yard drivers compete with the field. Wie has yet to overcome this, while the 260-270 yard hitters (Ochoa, Pettersen) have.

So in essence her game is caught in the middle: not good enough for the PGA tour, and overkilling the LPGA tour setups. When she figures this out she will dominate LPGA.

The first part of your post says it all.

Yeah, she can hit it farther... what next? Hitting it far doesn't make someone a good golfer.

Missing a cut of a PGA tour event by a single shot when you are 14 years old means you are a pretty good golfer, no question. I know solid golfers who tried for years to make a PGA tour cut and never succeeded.

You can argue that Wie peaked at 14, but most likely that will be proven false.

She is 18 now. What is the age of youngest PGA tour player, 22? This week is just a show, but it basically proves my point: she is a cut below the PGA tour, heads and shoulders above LPGA tour in ability but has yet to develop a strategy for exploiting it.

+2 through 12. Odds on making cut (most likely -1): 3%.

There's some new rule that has been changed dealing with if 80 or more make the cut... What is it?

My google got fixed:

In 2008, the PGA Tour Policy Board approved a change in the number of players that will continue playing to the next rounds. The cut will continue to be low 70 professionals and ties, unless that results in a weekend field size of more than 78 players. Under that circumstance, the cut would be made to the number closest to 70. Players cut from playing the weekend in this instance with a placing of 70th or better will get credit for making the cut and will earn official money and FedEx Cup points. This policy affected two of the first three events with cuts, the Sony Open in Hawaii and the Buick Invitational. In late February, the Policy Board announced a revised cut policy, effective beginning with the Honda Classic. The new policy calls for 36-hole cut to the low 70 professionals and ties and, if that cut results in more than 78 players, a second 54-hole cut to the low 70 professionals and ties.

since this seems to be the unofficial topic for the tourney, parker mclaughlin missed a 5 foot putt on 18 to shoot 61. as is, a -10 62, and leads by 4 currently
