Hello, I want to start playing golf. I used to play casually a couple of summers ago, but I was really bad so I still consider myself new to the game. I have a couple of questions.

1. I'm naturally a lefty. I write left handed, shoot a basketball left handed, throw football left, bat left handed, etc. However, since I was young, I've always used right handed clubs. So currently, swinging right handed with golf clubs feels natural to me. Since I suck so bad anyways, would it be wise to pick up some left handed clubs and just start from scratch with my swing?

2. I'm looking to purchase a starter set. I had my eye on this one.

What do you guys think? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Get a good used set instead of a cheap new set.

IMO I would play lefty if I were you. But go to a professional and let him check out your swing. He can fit you with the proper clubs.

I read the reviews on golfsmith. This set is not worth the money.

You want to make sure you have reliable golf equipment. I hope 130$ is not your maximum price point. You would never go new car shopping with $3000 in hand. Golf equipment takes a lot of torque and has to be built well. That means new golf equipment costs a lot relative to other sports.

Try craigslist. Try going to garage sales. Brand name equipment is 10x the quality of this set even if it's used.

I don't know if this is a good enough reason to go lefty but second hand equipment is a lot cheaper for leftys.

You can also save a lot of $$$ by buying new but slightly older models. Web sites like Hurricane Golf, RockBottomGolf, and GolfEtail all sell brand-new clubs that are from last year's model line or maybe the year before that... with new models introduced every year you can save a bundle by being a year or 2 behind, and you'd still have a fantastic set of new, brand-name clubs.

You guys are right. I do need a golf set that's reliable. However, remember I am a beginner. I just need a starter set (used or new); once I improve or get more involved with the game, I'll upgrade to a better set. What's the price range for a good starter set (used or new)?

When I started 2 years ago I bought a Tommy Armor starter set at Sports Authority (I think it was called Royal Scot and cost maybe $249 or thereabouts). Was perfectly serviceable for a beginner and included putter, stand bag, etc.

Might also want to check out Pinemeadow Golf, they have a good rep for lower-priced clubs and have some very affordable sets you can buy online.

You can get into a set of Bridgestone GC Mid irons on eBay cheap.. Good set that allows workability with forgiveness. Clean lines and easy to hit...

The drivers not ideal lowish loft and a stiff shaft. The irons are quite old and not that forgiving. But if your not sure you will play more then a couple of times they look cheep enough that you should be able to get your money back on ebay.
If you buy a complete set id look for one from a golf club company that also make mid priced clubs like Adams, Wilson or Powerbilt.
