TBH, i don't think Golf needs the olympics. it already has 4 majors, a tour championship, ryder/president's cup, a ton of great amateur events, and on top of it all the fedex cup.

OTOH, i am a huge Olympics fanboy, and they probably need golf if they are to tap into that market. however, it looks like it's going to be just another tournament, which will probably sucks. not sure if matchplay would work better.

Maybe a couple other formats...I think just one tournament style event with one Gold, Silver and Bronze would be a little boring for the Olympics...but anything is better than nothing.

I think the biggest similarity is with tennis, which is basically the same format as any Grand Slam, but a little smaller. And that's what golf in the Olympics will be--same format, fairly small field. And I think the fact that it's the Olympics instantly makes it as big as anything outside of the Grand Slam. The difference between tennis and golf is that tennis doesn't have all the big name events that golf does outside the majors--the players' championship, the world golf championships, the fedex cup, etc. And nobody cares about the Davis Cup, while the Ryder Cup is a pretty big deal. But again, I think the cachet of the Olympics immediately makes it almost like a fifth major.

I have heard that the reason golf got on was that the big tours promised to work the olympics into their schedules. EPGA will most likely increase the number of tournaments played to qualify for membership by 1 this year. The Olympics could be the one extra that year.

Golf would be great to fill out the schedule before track&field gets in there.

Morning and night for swimming, diving, gymnastics etc. and golf in the afternoon.

They should include a long drive contest.

And what about miniature golf. I could have a chance there.

The issue is now where. There are 2 courses in Rio, both aren't suitable although one has hosted an LPGA exhib. event. Next would be Sao Paolo which has a Euro event, but is about 270 miles away. Thought now is that there will be a mad dash to put together a TPC Rio 36 hole course.

Yeah but if it is country against a country will you only have one guy for the USa or will it be 3?

Top 15 in the world rankings regardless of country, then 45 more from countries that don't already have two golfers in the field.

Other way around I think, do the olympics need golf? Or would they benefit from having golf. I think so. Should be fun.
