If you say it will give me perspective to understand the game better, what do you exactly mean by this?
And my question about those books also still stand, are they any good or are there way better options?
I have never read a golf book, so...I don't know about that.
As far as my "perspective" comment, I know this much: golf is most awesomely satisfying when you strike high-arcing, aesthetically pleasing shots all day, and when you hit it like they do on the television machine.
Unfortunately, it can be LEAST rewarding when you try to do that on every shot, because you simply can't.
The only way to get to the point where you can occasionally and with any sort of regularity hit those great drives and approaches is if you first recognize your own limitations and adjust your goal from trying to impress yourself to trying to achieve the goal of getting the ball in the hole.
Then you can refine your game and add to your arsenal.
Even if your goal IS to "impress yourself" or whatever, this perspective will get you to that goal faster.
So I suppose I was saying to crawl before you try to fly. Make sure you can advance the ball down the course, preferably in the air, and make sure you have an idea of why you're doing each thing you're about to do.
Don't play by feel. Play by common sense.
"If I knock this 3-wood on from here, 240 away, it will be the greatest shot of my life."
"But 75% of the time, I chunk it of skull it or hit a grounder, and the other 25% I just hit an OK shot that leaves me 30 yards short."
"Where is my 3-hybrid?"
And if you don't hit that club well, hit a 5 iron. It's still better to be 90 out from the fairway than to be hitting three from the same place or from a drop at the OB line.
I am only so adamant about this because I wish someone had told me this a long time ago. I am sure I would have been a lot better a lot faster.
