Would be fun to "rail" somebody from here. I don't like the odds on that investment though.

Terrible investment...the only people that should sponsor "pro" golfers are family or uber rich, preferably uber rich family.

I haven't been for several years, but if somebody else paid for it I'd certainly go back. I might even practice beforehand.

would you two have to go to pre-qualifying or would your previous attempts/records/etc.. be enough to get you into 1st stage?

I'd have to go to the pre-qualifier, I'd imagine ship wouldn't have to worry about it.

those who cant....

I'm not on ship/Bo's level at all, could never go consistently low enough to consider playing professionally seriously, didn't have the short game. Thinking about regaining my am status though.

Where are Ship and JTrout and ntn from? we could have a little "play in" for it if it could work out.... I have a decent resume and would be excited to throw my name in the hat.

Totally worth it man. You lose one thing, being able to say "I am a professional golfer", which is actually all you need to do to become a pro again if you ever felt like it. Things that become available:

1.) You can play in the company scramble legitimately.

2.) You can play in USGA Amateur events.

3.) You can play in local section events (2ball, 4ball type things)

4.) You can play in a million other thins...you get the point.

It cost me whatever the fee was and a short application on the USGA website. I was an Am again within two weeks.

Get your card as an am, turn pro, make as much money as possible, and then turn am again, win the us amateur, get your card again, turn pro again, and win the masters as a pro, then say you want to go out as bobby jones and turn am again and win the pub links, use the exemption into the masters the next year from that (not your previous win) and win again as an amateur.

Then turn pro again and play cuthroat smack talking golf in the wendy's 3 tour challenge and retire and be a broadcaster. And then after that become a pga professional and dominate the NTPGA section events, and then become a rules official and dick someone out of a major.

if you don't mind saying did you have a successful teaching/playing career? I made very little playing but a decent sum teaching over a handful of years, I'm thinking that shouldn't be a problem.

I think you are asking to figur le out how long it will take....it is a retroactive timescale back to your last check. That is why if I enter this yr it will be as an am. So when I do apply if I miss my penalty would be based on quitting lat year.

Ship, when you say going as an Am, what does mean if you get through? How does it change things? Are you in training for it?

I cut a few checks in the Philly Section PGA events I played in (lol and the pay-scale and them giving $25 bucks to 30th place or whatever when it's $125 to enter and they pay first like $1000). I was an assistant instructor for Golf Digest Schools for a few years and worked as a First Assistant at a reputable club for 3 years. I was also out of the business for at least 3 years when I applied. It was painless.

The real question is if someone would be more/less nervous by being on someone else's dime.

It doesn't mean much really. There isn't any real money to win so I figure why enter as a pro because if I don't make I through I can still count back to 2009 if I do really for am status.

Not really in training. I only play on Fridays right now but I have been playing very well. We are playing a Ryder cup style match today and tomorrow vs Gleneagles and I just won morning match 3 up in a two man best ball. I was -6 through 17 on my ball....how can I tell the wife I want to go to Q school again?
