i used to weigh 190, 5' 9" and benched 300+. i spent a lot of time training for long drive competitions with a 44" big bertha driver. it wasnt the best equipment for getting maximum distance at the time. this was when the taylormade bubble shaft titanium head drivers were the rage.

i used to hit it about 300 on the fly with a low tragectory flight and this was with extreme strength training and swinging extremely hard within controlable paramiters. i'd probably get any where from 10 to 40 yards of roll depending on landing conditions. so we are talking 310 to 340+ from someone who trained extremely hard for this.

hitting a golf ball 300 yards on average with roll is no easy task. however, with todays modern equipment and above average strength, a guy can hit 300 with a decent swing.

with average strength, a guy is going to have to have a very good swing to hit it 300.

so no, i dont think any joe is going to hit 300 because the average joe isnt very strong or doesnt posses a very good swing.

my estimation is based on normal conditions.... meaning no helping wind and typical landing conditions.

...for sufficiently large values of "decent swing."

eta: finally this thread is clearly in the track I would have predicted at the outset.

what sort of threads would you expect from such a generalized question?

no, the average shmoe cannot learn to hit it 300......maybe.

is that better?

Question needs to be changed. Can the average shmoe hit it under 300 yards?

What kind of balls were you using?

Golf is arguably the hardest game of all to learn, so given that, take yourself back to your schooldays, and remember all the ******ed ****ers who could barely kick a football never mind find a team-mate with a pass, had trouble running in a straight line, couldn't have hit a cricket ball if the bat was three foot wide, and then ally that to your statement above. Clearly it is nonsense.

At sea level, no breeze, non-dry conditions, you have to hit a ball in the sweet spot with a squared clubface going 115 mph. You are crazy if you think that the first male you see in line at the post-office who's never golfed could be taught to do that in a day is better than 1/100
They did

picked up sean fister's new book "long drive bible". very, very good. hitting the ball amazingly........... lots of great stuff, but probably best was big pronounced wrist **** (flat though) into wrist roll. says quick hips make you long. wrist snap = super long......... anyway, very good book. slice gone now (probably come back). and i guess the guy from kelowna/kamloops was right about wrist snap.

durka, ok, it was kelowna!!!

anyway, sounds like you're already very long.... but fister's book seems amazing.

have it up there with my favorites now........ as i said before, lots of tips and advice, but what stood out the most to me was "big wrist ccockk into forearm roll. whole thing = snap.. NOT wrist flip......

i was at a $200,000 event a few weeks ago, and i didn't see any drives on normal fairway that were 300 yards. now, the guys weren't wailing at ball like long drivers, but still, a little eye-opening.

i remember watching a skins game and guys driving it 350 yards, but i just thought at the time these guys can really bomb it when they want to (questionable accuracy of course). but now i'm thinking it was downhill or downwine (or huge roll, but i think i would have noticed that)

a lot of the yardage stats on TV are bogus

lol, wat?

we're talking about official pga stats which are measured by laser and not by the tv stations.

The Shotlink stats are accurate, but the TV rarely gives those numbers. The announcers also typically give the yardage from the tips, when the tees may be up quite a bit. The irons the players hit are often misrepresented.

Watching TV you would expect that the avg pro hits his 5-Iron 210 yards, 8-iron 175, and PW 150. I've played a bunch of times with a couple of long hitting PGA and Nationwide pros and these distances are closer to 190, 155-160, and 135. A good drive carries 270-280 or so.

a couple of swings from yesterday. 147mph on a Swing Speed Radar, but who knows how accurate it is.

Who exactly are you talking about here, because those are pretty average distances. It's been quite some time since the "long hitting" pros hit it that short...

Avg hitting pros hit it that far. These guys are about 1 club longer.

you are talking the swing, not the ball?? (obviously the ball is going alot faster)........... your swing is incredibly impressive but i wouldn't have thought that fast.... what do the absolutely top guys do? i should know reading fister's book. are they 175 yards?.............. i guess your reading may be right as fister has pretty smooth swing too. zuback's swing is something to behold though.

anyway, thanks for posting... and congrats on the speed

The top guys are between 135-150mph. There are maybe 2-3 guys who can go over 150mph, but one of the component manufacturers has said he has never seen above 150mph. 175mph is a fish story and not physically possible. It'd be like someone pitching a 110+mph fastball. It's all about ball speed. 140mph in the center of the face can get 210mph ballspeed, which is enough to win the worlds.

Zuback is #1 best of all time and Fister is 2nd, but age is catching up a little. Jamie Sadlowski is the favorite to win this year, and he's only 5'11" 170lbs. amazing
