I'm not sure what you're trying to get at...downhill putts absolutely break more than uphill putts - it's empirical, not anecdotal. If you want proof, Pelz did a study.

You guys are kinda arguing two separate points. The amount of break around the hole, (say within 3 feet) which going uphill will break more because the ball is slowing down faster. And the TOTAL break of the putt, (say on a 30 footer) which going downhill will break more because the ball takes more time to travel therefore it breaks more.

"you gotta have a short memory..."

not sure if this is a tip. but its something that is commonly said in golf and so true for me. you can't let a bad shot, a few bad shots, or even an entire bad round break your confidence in golf. just keep on keeping on and belive in yourself.

Nick Faldo just had a good one on the Memorial broadcast. For slippery downhill putts, pick an intermediate target that's close to the ball and make a firm stroke to that target, rather than trying to make a soft stroke to the hole. Sounds pretty good, that one.

Saw a good tip on this from Gary McCord of all people.

He said optimally, you should keep a loose grip through the swing until the instant that you arrive at the ball, then tighten your grip at that moment.

Not saying I can do it, just that it sounds intuitive.

When playing matchplay, ask your opponent to tell you whether they inhale or exhale on the downswing.

I guess not really improving YOUR game, but might still help...

Swing through the ball, not at the ball.

To start I'll give you mine...........

Make sure you squash the ball into the ground with mid/short irons
k i don't really know much about golf, i just go out and swing and pretty horribly at that, but what does this do? you walk up to your ball on the fairway and put the club head on top of the ball and push down, is that legal?

^thats not what he means. He means that when you swing you should be hitting down on the ball into the ground. It causes the ball to compress and then launch off the club face. When struck well, the ball often makes a sizzling sounds coming off the face. You should be striking ball first, then ground which then leaves a divot..which should be about the length/width of a dollar bill.
