Never actually seen a 7 wood owned by anyone and never hit one. What would it be equal to as far as an iron goes? Anyone own one?

There's such a wide variety of lofts and lengths it can really depend. You'll hit it about the same distance as a 3 iron but way better/higher.

Ive been told by a few people that a 7wd is a great club and it might be worth getting one, I ordered one online along with a few others but i got the clubs and the 7wd was out of stock i guess but im going to get around to it. I hope the hipe is true..

I use mine on a few select courses I play. I only bring it out if there's a certain hole that calls for it or the greens are hard. It's my 4 iron distance.

Really though, I use it maybe 10 times a year but worth it.

mine used to replace my 3 iron. it was a goldwin senior flex and i was so $$ with it.

I replaced it with a titleist driving iron, but have considered going back to it b/c it is basically a guaranteed 200 yd straight down the middle shot.

Funny this is posted now.

Yesterday i hit a 7 wood for the first time in my life.
I am currently on the other side of the world, and went to a driving range and rented a set of clubs.

The 7 wood was the only fairway wood in there so i gave it a try.

It is a great club to hit imo. Very easy to get solid contact, and if you are having troubles getting enough height on your long irons, a 7 wood will be great.
I tend to push my shots a bit and then draw it back on line, but i have a bad tendency to leave my 3-4i hanging as a straight push, the 7wood came back every time.

Not gonna buy one though, but a nice club to use.

For the Ladies imo

please never get one, irons are far more accurate and easier to hit

I’m a high handicapper infrequent player who has carried one for many years. It goes a little farther then my three iron much higher and with more margin for error. I have gone through periods where it was the most used club in the bag. Unlike a three Iron I can use it from the fairway or light rough, with reasonable consistency. I can see how single digit players who can shape a three iron from the fairway might sacrifice the greater forgiveness and I can see how it might not suit high handicappers who don’t like woods but I can’t see how most players wouldn’t benefit from dropping the three iron for a seven wood or hybrid.

your description sounds like a hybrid. why carry a 7-wood if you already carry a 5h or something? are there such things as 7h?

Wow, didnt expect this much on this. I have been looking to possibly replace my 3 and 4 iron with woods, because as of right now I only have my driver and irons, I might try to find some that I can try to see if I hit them better, I hit my 3 and 4 iron pretty good, just looking for a little better trajectory on it. Thanks for all the replies

Well I also carry a 4h and there is a comfortable distance gap between it and the 7w, but if I had a hybrid I hit the same length id choose between them based on forgiveness. The 7w hits higher then the 4h and booth hit higher then their corisponding irons. High lofted fairway woods do the same jobs as hybrids but lots of high handicappers don't like hitting woods from the fairway. That and the fact that tour players didn't need them so they never had a tour presence like hybrids got meant that 7 and 9 woods never replaced most players long irons the way hybrids are starting to.

I picked up a 7 wood last year and I love it ... it's probably the equivalent to my 3iron (maybe a little more distance), but I hit it pure a lot more frequently than my 3iron. If I could redo my set up right now, I'd probably go driver/4w/7w and then a 4 iron/4 hybrid.

I love my 7 wood and feel like it is between a 3 and 4 iron for distance but has a much higher trajectory. I also have a 9 wood that replaces my 5 iron, but that one goes a little too high IMO, and may not be worth using for that reason plus the amount of times you will be called a woman for carrying one (hybrid 5 is better option I guess).

I carried a 7-wood over the last two years and only recently replaced it with a 3-hybrid. I hit it a lot off the tee on long par 3s and for my second shot on par 5s. I hit my 3-hybrid, 7-wood, and 3-iron similar distances, with the wood having the highest trajectory and the iron having the least. The hybrid and the wood are both much more reliable for me than the iron. Obviously that's going to vary from person to person but a 7-wood is definitely worth checking out if you are looking for a long-iron replacement type club.

I basically dumped my 3-iron after getting the 7-wood. I'm moving to the hybrid because I think I hit it better yet, but the 7-wood was a great club for me.

7 wood has the loft of a 3 iron, but at lower swing speeds travels higher and further because of the longer shaft and lower center of gravity. At higher swing speeds I think you could maybe argue that a 3 iron would go further because of the heavier weight and lower spin rate that it tends to generate.

At least that's what I've noticed. When I was 13 and carried one I hit it around 25 yards longer than my 3 iron. Now I think I hit them about the same. I assume if my swing speed were even faster then the trend would continue and the 3 iron would be longer.

Side note- I always thought it was weird that irons are generally separated by 3-4 degrees of loft, but with woods its more like 1.5 to 2 degrees.

I think that for most people the 7-wood's higher trajectory will lead to more distance than a 3-iron. Your average (and even well above average) golfer is going to struggle to get much height on a 3-iron and it's going to cost him distance. I agree that if you compare pure shots the 3-iron might well go further, but in practice I think most people will do better with the 7-wood.

One of my buddies used to have an old school callaway that I demolished. They're so easy to hit high and far that you shouldn't think twice about putting one in your bag if you struggle with your 3-4 iron.

Yeah, that's what I meant. I didn't mean for it to sound like I was recommending a 3 iron over a 7 wood. Even when I was a 3 handicap I didn't carry a 3 iron.

7wd is like a 4/5 iron and is great for ppl with low swing speeds/need more loft... underrated club imo i used one when i was like 13 helped A LOT

Exactly, there are many different 7 woods. You want one about 21-23 degrees if it is to replace a 3/4 iron combination. I honestly think the 7 wood is a little dated except for very slow swingers. In most instances a 3/4 Hybrid can do the same job yet is more versatile.
