how do you compete against thais running a shop? do you live in the shop so rent is free?
Well since you asked a legitimate question, I will answer. That being said, you give me any BS in a response or in the future and I will just ignore you.

As for your first question: The 8-terminal shop didn't make exceptional money, it made a little each month, but as I said that was the one bought to allow my dad's wife more freedom than real job at Well Built allowed for. I didn't say it was an example of excellent business (I wasn't involved in it and my father was doing others things for work at the time), what I said it was it SOLD for a nice little profit, this was due to its excellent location.

The KSR shop makes plenty of cash, it is a 17 terminal shop with 4 international call stations + wifi and we're attached to a restaurant for doing cross promotion. Not to mention we are located in the courtyard of a hotel that is almost always at full capacity with a captive audience of about 600 guests plus of course the run off from the street and KSR. As for the second part of your question: running a business against a Thai is the easy part, just lower your prices, they never will. The Thai business model is based on raising prices to try to convince one sucker to cover all the costs and it can work if there is only Thai competition around or if they are competing for Thai customers, but KSR is full of foreigners and foreigners like deals. There had been a second internet shop in our courtyard when we went in, since we came in about 5 shops along the soi have gone out of business mostly due to the international phone calls being so cheap. Not one Thai run shop has tried at any point to lower their rates to compete, at best they've stayed the same at over double ours. As I said in the first post, they're good LITTLE businesses. They make money, nobody is getting rich off them and yes we're ready to sell and move on, but there is nothing specifically wrong with the businesses. Business in Thailand in general on the other hand... different story.

Now I'm done with this topic... I'm sure there are many more interesting topics to chat about in the Land of Smiles than my internet shop and family history.

actually your views of running the business in thailand is a welcomed change to these threads, at least in my opinion.

Would be interested to hear more about some of the difficulties of running a business in Thailand, particularly with your restaurant.

Hey guys, my girlfriend and I are planning a trip in late December / early January to Phuket and are getting somewhat concerned about potential flooding. Admittedly I'm not an expert on the country and the infrastructure and while it seems like that area (and the country as a whole) should be fine by that time, I'm hoping for a second opinion.

Don't know if this is the right place to ask, but this forum's always been helpful and the media can be misleading, so I thought it was worth a shot.

I dont think theres even any flooding in Phuket at the moment

there is not any flooding in Phuket. And the weather should be pretty good when you arrive since monsoon season is over by then.
10-26-2011 , 12:40 AM
Phuket is nowhere near the current flooding, and is an island anyway, so any flooding there would be short-lived. As for the timing of your trip, I can't say whether or not it will be raining, but you'd want to book pretty shortly since December/Early Jan is by far the busiest period of the year for Tourism, and you might have trouble finding flights/accommodation if you wait much longer.
10-26-2011 , 12:43 AM
what they said.

phuket has been very beautiful for the past 10 days even when we are in the middle of low season when the weather could so much worse

and the floods are gone from everywhere by january when it is dry season already, then ppl will be crying for water
