'Until 1888 the Thai New Year was the beginning of the year in Thailand; thereafter 1 April was used until 1940. 1 January is now the beginning of the year. The traditional Thai New Year has been a national holiday since then.'

It then goes on to say -
'Songkran falls in the hottest time of the year in Thailand. If it falls in the middle of the week, many Thai take off from the previous Friday until the following Monday. '
not surprising ^^

I am travelling to Thailand this month with a friend. We are both poker players and neither of us have been before.

Basically I am just looking for a little advice on the best locations in general for grinding, partying and meeting other players etc as I might be there for a while.

Also, do you recommend getting a flight to BKK then searching for a hotel/villa when we get there? I was told you can get up to 1/3 of the price knocked off this way...

thx

Bangkok or Phuket. Showing up and getting your place will almost certainly be cheaper as the websites you are looking at are geared toward noobs and have jacked up prices.

it depends on how long you'll be here. if you're not coming long term, pick a place and go with it. if you're gonna be awhile, do yourself a favor and check out Phuket, BKK, and CM before deciding where to settle (unless you know already where you want to go aka love beaches or megacities, etc)

I'm no UT expert, but the only thing I did that was semi-neat there was go to the Cobra village. It's about 20-30 miles North of the city.

Personally, I liked Khoan Kaen a lot more. Right on the border, by the river, and seemed to have a better atmosphere. But like I said, I don't really know what to do in UT and didn't figure it out during my very brief stay there. Seemed kinda drab to me.

you mean nong khai, right? khon kaen is not near the border

i spent couple of nights in udon thani 2 years ago. i didnt try to find any cultural stuff from internet beforehand so we only spend the time walking around in the day, found one mall but that was about it

in the night they had a standard hooker street there and on another street they had bunch of foreign bars and we spent some time on a irish one. we tried to ask for a nightclub but only found a smaller one though it was pretty nicely decorated

it was a while back so i wouldnt know any directions but the centrum itself isnt that big so if you want to find something it shouldnt be difficult

Cheers for that, think I now have all the nightlife info from other sources. The Irish place you mention sounds like the Irish Clock which is supposed to be good for food. Mr Tongs is supposed to be the best nightclub with loads of girls apparently, most likely rentals though by the sounds of it......

Just have one full day to sightsee so will probably just have a mooch around the city for a few hours and see what's happening......

You're in the wrong place. Everyone knows Phuket nightlife is better.
