Hey guys,

Coming to USA for a few weeks in April. Most of the time will be spent in Orlando but we are in New York for 3 days and one the things I would like to do is take in some American sport.... But only have time for one game and not sure what to go for?

Keeping in mind I have two young kids, 6 and 3, which is going to be better:

New York Yankees vs Minessota @ New Yankees stadium?
New York Knicks vs Boston Celtics @ Madison Square Gardens?

I dont expect my three year old to sit and be absorbed by either for however long these games last. We may even end up leaving earlier as we won't really be that engaged in the outcome. I just want to take the opportunity to experience a typical US stadium atmosphere so would like to know which is likely to be more fun and which is more of a family environment? Baseball or Basketball? Are there specific family stands / tickets that can be bought? In our stadiums there are often areas where no alcahol is served etc.? Anything like that?

Also - reliable online ticket seller that I can book from now and collect in New York or have sent to my hotel???

To my knowledge, there are no family stands/areas in the stadiums. Your kids will probably have no idea what is going on, given their age.

I think your kids will probably be more engaged in a basketball game. The sport itself is faster paced and (generally) more exciting.

Tickets, there are alot of things you can do. A more reliable place is stubhub

but you'll pay a bit of a premium for it. A bit more shady is craigslist, where you can often find brokers and sellers for games. Chances of scam go up though on CL (but on average, you'll pay less). You could also try to go to the scalpers right before the game starts, but it's a gamble. Sometimes you can find them fairly cheap (depending on the turnout), but you'll also see a high markup as well.

yankees game will be much more engaging for kids i would think...hard for me to say as a Mets/Knicks fan. basketball games are much more focused on the gameplay itself, whereas in baseball there a bunch of random stuff going on, and people don't focus on the game so much

Thanks.

Just to clarify - not to fussed how engaged the kids are - just so long as the environment is family friendly. This is more an outing for the wife and I but we don't really want to leave the kids with baby sitters.

My preference is to watch the basketball but I thought the baseball may be a more family friendly environment. Less rowdy etc.... Our kids have been with us to sports stadiums here, they are used to it. Just looking to minimise the chance of finding myself sitting next to a couple of drunk hooligans (which I am sure could happen anywhere in the world - just trying to assess if its more likely at baseball or basketball.)

basketball is shorter and more 'exciting' but baseball has that American special feel to it so it really just depends what you are going for. Kids are going to be fine at both but Yankee Stadium is more of an 'experience' than MSG for whatever that is worth. Yankees game should be cheaper as well.

it all depends...give your options, I would go with the knicks game bc the atmosphere will be thru the roof at the garden..coming down to the end of the season, every game counts...
