Can someone please outline the difficulties that I should be concerned about when it comes to moving to Toronto for 6 months as a US citizen. I'm basically concerned with the following.

1)Renting a place in Canada / passing the border patrol
2) Setting up a bank account in Canada
3) Bringing my car into Canada

If someone would be able to address these concerns, and anything else that you can think of, it would be greatly appreciated.

1a) Personally I am a landlord and always require a credit check and references to any potential tenants. Also I require to sign a one year lease. This might be tuff since you don't have a SIN#. I imagine a lot of decent places would require the same thing.

1b) If you pack one suitcase and your laptop and say your just staying at Niagara Falls casino a few days you should't have a problem. If you load up your car with a bunch of **** and have no employment and tell them you are visiting for 6 months, you will probably get denied.

2) Shouldn't have a problem opening one up.

3) Once you cross no problem with the car. If you stay for a long period of time and cross back over to the states and cross over again you might run into some problems. As you pull up to customs they scan your plate and can tell how long you have been away etc.

rent a room w/ some students or something might be your best play here. Just make up a clever lie about how you are bringing your sister a bunch of her stuff or something. Also there are other cities in Canada you know, just gonna put that out there. Niagara Falls is a really nice option for you.

If you go on craigslist there are tons of good apartments for sublet at the moment because all the college kids are going elsewhere for the summer.

yeah, if you want to do mostly online poker with good access to B&M, i'd do niagara falls or nearby towns niagara-on-the-lake (chicks' dream town), st catherines, welland, port colbourne, fort erie. u need a car for any of these places, i think.

obviously, if you want the cultural experience of toronto, then live there. niagara falls is an hour and 15 minutes with no traffic, 2+ hours much of the time.

Been thinking about this a great deal since last week. Curious to know if anyone else is still hot on Toronto (or NF).
