Hey,

In September I plan on going off from my home town in Northern Ireland and see the world, Not as a holiday but kinda as a lifestyle(poker FTW), I'm starting in Amsterdam. My plan is to stay for a few months and move on,(probably to Berlin.)

What I'm asking is,

- Does anyone have any advice on how to get affordable accommodation for 1-3 months? Is it possible?(By affordable I mean <400 euros/month

- I haven't had much experience with staying in hostels, could it be possible to work a deal with a hostel for a long term stay?

- Any particular area of Amsterdam I should be looking for? And Berlin if possible?

- Any suggestions on where is easy enough to get to after Berlin?

Any advice is appreciated, cheers

I cant see accommodation in both Amsterdam and Berlin being all that cheap. Have you thought about maybe Eastern Europe/Asia.

From this.

it seems you have money, but not all that much.

Berlin is great city, I would of thought rent is cheaper there, but I could be competently wrong. Amsterdam is overpriced, but like I said if you have money then its okay.

There's AirBNB as well. I think you can always manage if you really want (couchsurfing and stuff), but looks like hostels are generally in 25-30 euro/day range in AMS.

Some hostels do deals for long term stay, others don't. You just have to ask around.

I worked for accommodation at a couple of hostels in New Zealand. It was only a few hours a day so you would have plenty of time for poker and sightseeing if you managed to make a similar arrangement.

Amsterdam is pretty expensive in general yeah but i wouldn't say overpriced. Berlin has more to offer as a city and in value. if you do manage to get a place in Amsterdam which is going to be pretty hardcore, just get a nice bike because the city is small enough so you can get around with it. I would do the staying longer part in Berlin where the rent and especially the availability of places is better and visit Amsterdam for a couple of weeks because it's obviously gorgeous. popular areas to live in in berlin are Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg (lot of Turks and younger people), Moabit (students), Prenzlauer Berg (more yup). And of course the city center ''mitte'' but as long as your just somewhere near those areas you should be okay because the subway runs through the night on most lines (sometimes only on the weekend) and a lot of night buses as well

Using a combination of these sites you can get cheap accommodation (aribnb, wimdu, hostelworld), flights (adioso), trains (bahn), set up vlog (youtube), blog(tumblr), sometimes stay for free(couchsurfing), and arrange to meet locals (cs) that will help show you around.

adioso airbnb wimdu couchsurfing hostelworld tumblr youtube bahn

I know a guy who's just done 639 days around the world, no job, just travel video and paid the way around via youtube ads and his ad revenue

Rooms in Berlin are actually quite cheap compared to the other great cities of Europe. I rented a room in a nice place in Charlottenburg for under 400 euros/m. Places in East Berlin can be had even cheaper.

Best if you either speak German or have a friend who does and can make phone calls for you. Can't remember the url, but there's a website (in German) with a ton of rooms to rent all over town.

I'd recommend taking a bicycle with you for travel within cities. Bit of a hassle to get it from city to city, but definitely worthwhile if you're going to be staying for months.

Really, what you need to do is actually get out there and try different options to see what strikes your fancy. Different people will find different things acceptable or dreadful.

For example, some people are willing to live in squalor as long as they are in some hip city center, whereas others would rather have a nice comfy place even if it means going to secondary neighborhoods, secondary cities or secondary countries.

You really won't know until you try. It's all common sense. If Amsterdam is too expensive go to Berlin. If Berlin is too expensive go to Prague. Etc.

Leidseplein neighborhood in Amsterdam is the total nuts. If you can find a place in that area you would be all set. Seconds from holland casino, best clubs, bars, smoke shops, museums etc.

<400 euros/month you can't stay anywhere in europe afaik

I don't know about long-term travel, but this sounds like an exciting adventure. I would be interested in following along if you create a blog/TR/whatever.
