I will be moving to Guangzhou at the beggining of March for work+grinding any spare time I have, if any of you are there it would be cool to get in touch, see you soon!

I've been reading this thread and I see it's possible to play online on most of the sites and if not I'm intending to get a VPN. I also have no clue of chinese but I trust my english (for work purposes I mean )

I feel the opposite,

I dont think I could ever live in the North mainly because of the cold. I grew up in New England, so the last thing I ever want to see again is snow.

For someone who plays poker for a living and wants to live in a Chinese city, Shenzhen or Guangzhou would be their best options since your close to Macau and you can still have your "China" experience.

Hey guys, good thread. I am going to be coming to China to play poker and take a Mandarin course. Does anyone have any experience with the IMandarin company? I am most likely going to be taking the course in Guangzhou due to its proximity to Macau so i'll be able to go there on the weekends or whatever. Has anyone been playing the games in Macau lately? How have they been? Anyone here living in Guangzhou or have any experience with the area? Do you guys know if i'll need a VPN? I play on Stars, Fulltilt and IPoker. Sorry about all of the questions and thanks in advance!

I took a beginners course at I-mandarin when I first came to Guangzhou.

I spent more time teaching the teacher English then she taught the class Chinese. I wouldn't recommend it.

It is overpriced as well, when in comparison that you could get a private tutor one-on-one for cheaper and learn alot more.

If you don't do the private tutor route then check with Jinan University and Sun Yat Sen University. Both schools offer short term courses.

it's easy to play 10-15 tables on FTP with china telecom on the island of hainan so i'd be surprised if its not possible in guanzhou. i dont play on stars though but i know i could use it here if i wanted, so should be the same.

connection gets a little laggy in the evening/ night, but shouldnt bother u if u're a pro since morning and afternoon are peak hours for poker.

train takes forever (several days i think)

plane tickets are cheap in china, and u can usually buy one way ticket if you like for no more than half the price of the return ticket.

and u can always find a good bargain (except during chinses spring festival)

check this website to know the price u should pay: ctrip.com (they have english). then u can go to any travel agency in china and ask for this price or lower.

i feel like u, i liked beijing city itself, but i lived for a year so i saw summer, fall, winter, and spring there and the only good weather u can get is in fall. It lasts one month.

i think shenzhen is good because everybody speaks chinese there. in guangzhou the mother tongue is cantonese so i feel it's harder to learn chinese there

Thanks a lot.The island of Hainan sounds to me like a perfect tropical place for vacation. What's the best way to cash out from poker sites in china? I want to withdraw money on a regular basis on stars as fast as I can when I got there.

yeah hainan has very good weather especially in winter, was nice to go to the beach in january

sorry can't help you about the best way to cash out, i just arrived in China and still havent find it myself. i'm still cashing out in my bank in France, in euros, then i withdraw cash here with my french visa card in atms which is obviously not the best way.

i guess u could cashout directly from poker sites to your chinese bank account but i'm a little worried because poker is not legal here...so who knows what will happen if you do it on a regular basis....

so the best way in my opinion is to have a bank account in us dollars outside china and make wireless tranfer between this account and a chinese bank account in dollars (this is possible), then change it to chinese yuan.

or moneybookers mastercard?

would be happy to hear how other guys do here....

Hey,

Seems there are some people moving to Guangzhou the upcoming month. I'm a Dutch guy who will move to Guangzhou by the end of March, and have no return date yet. Going to do research @ sun yat sen university and got PLENTY of time for other stuff (poker, 400 to nl2k fr, going to Macau, sports, clubs, bars, movies, travelling and much more).
Would be awsome if I could meet some of you guys over there (PRoMaNiaC, ouam, maplestar, thehabit 420)

happy chinese new year guys....

welcome to China hoyasnaxa, good luck in the north...

not really sure what i'm doing next...but it would be fun to meet you peter and other guys. My visa ends on the beginning of april, so i'll probably be in hong kong to get a new visa, end of march/ beginning of april, maybe we can meet up there, or in shenzhen (i might stay a few days in shenzhen so it would be easier to set up a meeting)...i guess it's on your way from the netherlands anyway....
