Went up to Shanghai for the first time to see Iron Maiden a couple nights ago. Was surprised to see that for the most part, it's way more civilized that Guangzhou. Didn't get to do anything because it was rainy but quite enjoyed the vibe.

One thing I didn't like though was the amount of coins I got. I've lived in Guangdong for 5 years and I've received like 10 coins total--each time the shopkeepers apologized because they didn't have bills. I didn't even know there was a 5 jiao coin until 2 days ago lol.

What I hate at the gym is that nobody wipes their sweat of the f***ing machine when they're done. This should be mandatory in Guangdong since it's so hot/humid here. Secondly, there's always some guy smoking in the locker room. F that guy! Still less annoying than old people who walk backwards and clap their hands at 6:00 in the morning!

Still, gyms in China compared to LA are quite cheap. Also, maybe it's just my thing, but there's always tons of leng neui walking around in yoga outfits throughout the day.

As for poker, I still highly recommend Manila. I'm going there in a month or so.

When you grow up going to bathouses with your family and seeing hookers together with coworkers the nudity isn't so weird and lord knows the importance of blow drying one's balls - but seriously, never understood why men blow dry downtown, women too btw

id like to hear more about your childhood.

Obviously the men and women who groom themselves have no need for that. What percentage of women in China aren't sporting full bush?

I'm learning poker-related Chinese vocabulary so I can better understand what my Chinese friends are talking about (and talk to the ones who don't speak English)。 So far I've got
小盲、大忙
一、两对

梅花
黑桃
红桃
方块
枪口
同花顺

what others would be helpful?

never seen the character for a lot of these before, they just came up in conversation.

two fun ones are "jin bi" and "sheng bi" which literally means tight pussy and loose pussy. Wouldn't use that on anyone but a friend, but they find it hilarious.

你玩嘢啊!nei5waan2ye5aa3 literally: you're playing/joking. in context: are you kidding me?
做乜嘢啊 zo2mat1ye5aa3 literally: what are you doing. in context: WTF are you doing.

Since these are Cantonese they should only be used in Macau or Guangdong. I always get a pop when I say them.

More technical terms:
Call: 叫 giu3 or 跟 gan1
Bet: 加注/落注 gaa1 zyu3/lok6 zyu3
Check: My Cantonese friends say "Go"...I don't know if this is an actual Cantonese word or if they're using English. Either way, tapping the felt is the universal check movement so you don't need to say anything.
All-in: Just say it in English!

Lb, you speak Chinese pretty well, any poker vocabulary to add?

My poker friends say gua4bi1!!!! A lot when they lose or just as a negative in general. Its a curse word, but one that many Chinese people don't even know.

From what I understood you are looking for Cantonese slang? I only learned mandarin.

running a constant ping of pokerstars.com in the background works wonders to keep a steady connection

on a mac you can do this via the terminal and just type ping pokerstars.com, on pc it's fairly similar but you'll need to add in an instruction to repeat to the command

Cantonese is quite a bit easier to learn imo. The 9 tones really help me out. Assuming both Mandarin and Cantonese have more or less the same amount of words that are distributed equally among all tones, that means the ratio of possible words per sound is a lot lower with Cantonese.

Are you sure it's gua4pi1? Sounds kind of like 狗屁 gou3pi2 (Mandarin) literally dog fart. Contextually, Bull****. If not, I'm guessing it's similar in meaning.

Now that you say that I'm not sure either. But prior to that post I was pretty sure.

Didnt played much poker with the local, but I played alot of 万智牌. Most common expression was 牛b. Playing 英雄联盟 I often heard 我2了.
