Photoshop your pic (yasrsly)

Just show up and start speaking english. Recruiters might not want to deal with you but a resperate school will.

Hey, just arrived in China a few weeks ago. Teaching ESL in Haining and want to know if there is anyone around. Also I have had a hard time finding others. No FB makes it a little hard to find any xpats in the area.

Do you guys have any suggestions?

That's close to Shanghai, right?
If so, try this: http://www.shanghaistuff.com/

Anybody have any tips for me? Really frustrated.
There are plenty of locals that speak native level english and would love to get paid what foreigners are paid for teaching english.

Parents are really unwilling to pay big money for a chinese face teaching english and will probably think you're lying about being ABC.

Good luck with your search, but the market is against you.

God I really hate the spring festival.

Suddenly the country turns from super efficient to barely working when it comes to any kind of deliveries.

Kueidis are usually super fast, but these days it takes a week to get anything from a major city to another major city and even yihaodian takes 3 days to deliver, when it's usually half a day ffs.

I thought taobao had made it clear to them that things have to work this spring festival, as they were really pissed about the delays before, but apparently people that are willing to work right now are hard to come by for delivery companies.

You don't think there is an efficient general "can do" attitude outside of the government?

Regardless of whether you show up or do your search from the states, you're going to face discrimination. But eventually you'll get a gig since English is your native language. A good friend of mine is black, and he taught English in China for 4 years in the early 2000s. Also, both of these blogs are run by non-white guys who taught English in China (and Taiwan):
http://www.marcusgoesglobal.com/
http://hannwang.com/

So, don't give up hope. You'll eventually get something, it'll just take more applications and interviews than if you were white.

Yeah right now I am facing tons of discrimination from these schools. The very first thing they all ask me for is a photo and then don't bother asking me anything else after they discover that i'm not caucasian. really really frustrating. i am their least desired candidate for teaching English as it's bad for their marketing. they actually prefer semi-fluent english speakers over Asian-Americans who have lived in the U.S their entire lives. seriously tilting me to no end. thanks for your advice though.

What do I need to bring if I wanna open an account at HSBC / similar bank in HK and want to open an account with internet banking, investment and ATM?

Other than a passport, and say $10k USD?

Impossible to open a HK account for a 'normal' person unless you have HK ID or work/live in HK. There are new regulations in place regarding this subject since April 2012.
Another option if you are living in a country 'close' to HK is to open up a company and then setup a HSBC business account. After this step open up a personal account.

does anybody know how a chinese citizen can get a visa to go to U.S? i've researched a little but all i see is that they have to go through an interview which doesn't take place for at least 60 days or so, and that they have to have strong ties to china (bank accounts, legit job, family, etc), an invitation letter from a U.S citizen, and clear intentions that they will be coming back to china. i'm not really sure how old those sources are but that's what i've read.

so does anybody know what the current process is like? i'm asking cuz a friend is interested in visiting me in the U.S (i am a U.S citizen). thanks

It highly depends on where your friends hukou is from + the personal circumstances, but my Chinese friends all tell me that the visa process is apparently more relaxed these days.

Your friend can find out more about the process on the consulate / embassy website that is relevant for him/her + forums in chinese with first hand experience from people that have a hukou from his city / province.

为什么?

I'm happy with it and never had any problems. Only thing I know Unicom does better is 3G support for iPhone GSM devices.

To the Chinese American guy...Don't give up hope bro. I'm part Hawaiian and wait for it...JAPANESE and i still found a job. Of course I told them I'm just part Hawaiian, but whatever. You might have to start out in a small city, but there are definitely areas in China that are begging for any English speaker with a pulse.

Also, I would try to circumvent using an agency...just apply directly to schools on websites like dave's esl cafe...
