I'm looking for a sunny and exciting destination (outside of Europe) for december. September, october and november I'll be in Lisbon but in december I'll have another 2, possibly 3, weeks off. I would like to use these to see something on the other side of the world

Don't wanna spend 2 weeks on a beach either. Some sightseeing, adventure, good night out but also some culture and nature would be nice to experience.

Requirements for this trip:
- I want to spend a maximum amount of $1000 (+- €900) on flights (return trip). I'm leaving from Brussels (Belgium).
- Sun! Don't have to tropical temperatures, a 21°C-26/27°C (70°F-80°F) should be more than enough. More is fine aswell.
- Staying in a hostel so there must be some hostels aswell

Thanks for the advice so far guys! Oz/NZ will be too expensive for me so that isn't an option (altough I would like to go there ). Anybody with South-America tips?

Northeastern Brazil has some of the best beaches in the world and is not that far from Europe. Also cheap if you know how to bargain. Keep in mind population there is very ugly, though. Avoid Salvador.
