I just did Dulles to JFK to Seoul (ICN) back in April. I flew Jetblue from Dulles to JFK. This flight is less than an hour so I just watched DirecTV. Love Jetblue, btw.

From JFK to Seoul I was on Korean Air. Awesome airline. I think it was a 14 hour flight. My flight left at about 1am which was excellent. I was already beat and then I took 2 Excedrin PM's as soon as I boarded. I highly recommend this as I slept for about the first 7 hours and then watched movies, read, and got up every so often to briefly walk around/stretch the rest of the flight.

The last hour of the flight was probably the worst. Seemed like it took longer than the previous 13 hours combined.

Like others said, definitely bring a toothbrush/paste, mouthwash and some deodorant. It felt so much better to clean up some after my 7 hour "nap".

I've done three trips to Japan in the past 4 months so I can relate to the long flight. I can tell you coming back the closer you can get back to your original destination the better as there is nothing worse then getting off the plane in LA or San Fran and having another 3 to 4 hour flight.

Luckily my company pays for business class so it makes the whole sleeping thing alot easier but I have problems even doing that. As someone said try not to get a tremendous amount of sleep the night before as you want to be sleeping when you normally wouldn't to adjust as fast as possible. An ambien is really your best bet as about 3 or 4 glasses of wine with an Ambien will knock you out. You can watch tons of movies but I fine that gets me through maybe 6 to 8 hours and need to do something else with the other time. On flights I haven't slept I try to get up and walk around between each movie which is always a good reminder to do so. Also, the get drunk thing works for the first part of the flight but there is nothing worse then going through the being drunk and then having a hangover all in the same flight. You will find you can get drinks pretty easy the first 3 hours of the flight then after that it is a little tougher, especially in coach. If your in business class alot of flights they will set up a little self service area where you can go get some snacks and fill up on wine. At least that is my experience on Northwest.

Also, I've always gotten to my destination in the afternoon or early evening and I would suggest you try to stay awake as long as possible. You will want to hit your hotel and sleep but if you can force yourself to stay awake you will acclimate much faster. Regardless though expect to get up between 4am and 6am each morning even if you are someone who likes to sleep. Going that direction is always easier for me to acclimate versus coming back home. It usually takes me at least a week once back home.
