There's a good chance places will be booked if you show up on FMP or NYE. Should definately book in advance if possible. Often rooms that are left are on the other side of the island.

don't underestimate the New Year's Eve in Thailand. Hotels&flights etc are super expensive and get booked very early.

Like if you wanted to fly to Phuket from BKK the only flights that are left now (4 days before) are in the evening of the 31st (I checked airasia, thai airways, nokair and bangkok airways). And most of the people who arrived just now will be heading out in the first few days of the new year

There's not much point going to Koh Tao if you aren't going to be Scuba diving.

Pokerspiv is right - Koh Tao is tiny and it's the most boring place in the world if you're not diving. I've never been there for NYE but I imagine it would be a very quiet affair.

Anyone who is in Chiang Mai, avoid Girasole breakfast.

Also, IDK if standard, but at the Oasis Spa they charge 10% service charge, but that gets pocketed by owners and is not a tip to the therapists. Then, I hear about a few restaurants who take the tips to the owners, the servers don't get any of it. Is this standard? Its not only taking directly from the people you are trying to tip, but in the case of service charges, also stops people from tipping as they believe they are "tipping already". Isn't a service charge suppose dto be a forced tip, not just a way to increase the price?

There are ferries from Koh Samui and Koh Tao to KPN for full moon parties/new years etc. Lots of people stay on these islands when KPN hotels are full and 'commute' to the parties.

I don't know that I'd say Koh Tao is 'the most boring place in the world' it is quite a beautiful island and there are some decent bars, nice restaurants etc. If you go there alone or with a small group and are looking for action and to meet new people, I can see how it might be boring. But if you are with a larger group and will primarily be hanging out together, it is an excellent choice, whether you'll be diving or not.

Commuting to and from Koh Phangan on the night of a party is an incredible hassle and I think a lot more stressful/time-consuming than it's worth, unless you have a private boat chartered (highly recommended btw).

Koh Tao is beautiful during the day but you can't see it when it's night time so it's kind of moot for a NYE party. You'll find bigger/better parties on other islands.

What is the best way to get to koh panga from samui?
Are there any regular boats or should we hire someone with boat to pick us (~16 persons) up to samui?
How long it takes?

They have special boats that run very frequently on the night of big parties specifically for this reason. You can drink on them etc.

Agreed about better parties on other islands.

For 16 people charter your own boat. Takes less than an hour. Any travel agent on Samui can help you with this.

Without question the biggest party night of the year in Bangkok. There is something good going on everywhere.

The epicenter is in front of CentralWorld and that whole surrounding area. The Asian version of Times Square in NYC.

Then every place you would normally go party surely has a special event going on that will be packed (RCA, Thonglor Soi 10, Q Bar, Patpong, any after hours spot - whatever you are into)

Im planning on "moving" to thailand sometime b/w the 12th and the end of january. (Ive actually read about the last 100 pages of this thread so i will refrain from asking same questions over)
Where is the best place to get a hotel for like a one week stay while i look for something more permanent? Is it smart to book something online before i get there?
Do any poker players have an opening coming up in their place for a couple months? Thanks in advance
