I was able to get my student visa before going. I just emailed back and forth wit Pro Language and was able to get one. You just have to send them some documents, fill out an application, wire a deposit to their bank account etc. It took me about 1.5 months for the whole process.

you should be able to get the non immigrant educational visa before coming from even from the US. I think MMerli thought you just wanted one without any valid reasons (which was also possible before but not anymore) since you didnt mention studying thai at all

just contact some school down here and then contact some embassies/consulate in the US to find one that gives you the visa

It's overpriced, you can get for cheaper if you find a maid on your own or through a thai friend. Don't expect them to be fluent in English though.

I'm a US citizen who's gonna be applying for a tourist visa at a local Thai consulate in the US. Do I need to have a roundtrip ticket booked before applying?

Check the specific website for the consulate in the city you are applying. They each have different requirements. For example, here's Chicago's http://www.thaiconsulatechicago.org/clate/visa.html

I called the NY consulate, and they said an itinerary and flight info is not necessary when applying for a tourist visa.

to the ppl handing out their passports to random thais doing their visaruns for them keep these scams in mind too

from thaivisa forums

Quote:
I did a visa run today and i have done it many times myself going in and out of cambodia. There are many 'runners' who will get your passport (including their borders official policemen) stamped on your behalf at 300b. It would be 200b at the arrival on cambodia side.

Today i arrived with an upset stomach, desperately needing the toilet - make the mistake of letting the borders police running to get the stamps for me. To cut the story short, when i went back wanting to collect the passport... they say they don't do viaa runs like that (the very same person who took my passport) but says that my face is 'familiar' and thinks my passport is the one missing at the police station.. he offered to get it back at 5000b, i took the offer because my most important document is with them. Got it back in the end, i hope everyone will not be tempted by letting anyone runs your visa for you.

People should keep in mind that a Passport is NOT their property.

A passport bearing your name is usually your government's property, not yours. If anyone refuses to give you back your passport, for almost any reason including some valid ones, that is one area where your embassy will actually do whatever they need to do to get their property back on your behalf.

Probably a bit different with fake visa runs, but something to keep in mind for motorcycle rentals, etc.

You can buy a sim card in Thailand, but if your iphone is locked to your carrier you will either need to pay to get it unlocked or jailbreak it first.

I just used True's online live customer service and they were actually very helpful. WTF? For some reason each chat session is limited to 20 minutes so I'm lucky I only had a simple issue.
