We have the in-built aircon as opposed to wall-mounted. Is this just super inefficient? We also have a water boiler which is rare. The water is scalding if you turn the tap too far hot - could this be at a super high setting or something?

I've been here since 2014. Have a house in Saphan Sung....
Recent spike in electricity bills is from the end of the gov't subsidy to the electric company as the old gov't is being replaced. There goes the discount!
This has been addressed already as it was met with a mass of complaints and all over thai media.
Elections were literally last night and expect the new bills to be less, but not as good as they were before. I'll have to ask my woman about it to compare, but we can get a better indication with this next bill.
The built in units are for larger rooms and will cost more. Best to set it so it holds a reasonable temp you can live with vs turning it on when you enter the room... My gym does this and manages to keep the place cool enough during the day. We set it like at 26 and auto to hold the temp in a 'room temperature' range. It takes a ton of energy to cool it down from high temp to comfortable room temp...best bet is if it has a thermostat timer, you manage to limit the use or hold a higher temp between 10-5pm.
It's not just you...we all got screwed when the subsidy ran out and then the electric company got to charge us all full price! They do the same thing with gas prices.
