just spent 3 days in bangkok and i just love using public transportation there coming from phuket. 28km from the city to airport under 300b with tolls. in phuket you can't get 10km with that price. we were 3 white people + a thai and not once did we have to ask them to turn on the meter when we stopped a moving taxi. only had problems getting from silom to platinum at 2pm (stopped like 8 taxis and none of them wanted to go there due to traffic) so we took the taxi to BTS and went to MBK instead.

this wasn't all a reply to you but more just writing, again, how much better taxis/BTS etc are for bangkokians

I've had to flag down 5 taxis before finding one that will use a meter in Bangkok. However, that's still a lot better than the case in Phuket or Samui where no taxi will use a meter ever under any circumstances.

(We do have Songthaews in Samui though, which makes getting around the island reasonably cheap. They just don't go to the airport.)

I've been here 1 1/2 years and have made 3 trips to Laos and a couple to Cambodia. Going back to Vientiane for another visa but a bit nervous for the first time. I"ll post an update when and if I get back here for anybody that may be in a similar situation. Maybe time to check out the thai schools but it I'm living in KK with my gf and don't know of any programs up here. Anybody here had any problems with getting several tourist visas in Vientiane or Cambodia? tia
