Taxi trip report.

Came back from the moonbar with friends, dropped them off on Sathorn road then stayed in the cab and hit thonglor, at some random intersection there was what looked like a dodgy police control. When I first came here for some reason i just expected them to take it easy on the tourists cause they are an important part of the economy, but police officers dont care they see you like many other thais do, as wallets. So from others experiences I've had i expected them to pull my cab over. They did.

The guy seemed to speak limited english. He asked me how are you doing sir? and proceeded to point his flashlight at my face. I'm starting to expect a bribe/corruption situation. The guy asks me to come out of the cab, for no apparent reason. 6 officers proceeded to circle me, two of them start going through my pockets, litterally everyone of my pockets, they open my wallet, go through my money. Fortunately i had spent ~1K on the evening so i only had 300 thb left in 100thb bills. It would of been kind of obvious for them to take one of the three bills and I didnt have anything else on me of value. I'm guessing the one who was talking to me figured he also had to leave me cash if i wanted to pay the cab i was in.

I asked a few times what they were looking for. No answer. They want through my pack of cigs pretending to look for drugs. Lol. It was a monday night and i had only had 1 alcoolized drink.

No explanations and I was allowed to reenter my cab after a few mins.

Lesson: If you carry alot of money on you make sure to segment it, i.e. leave some minimal amount in your pocket and carry the bulk of it somewhere safe.

Spoiler:
was fun though

but you live there, and you brag about being a cheapskate. most tourists don't get on a plane to hang out at beer bars for two weeks. 120-180 baht is standard for a drink in bangkok.

This happened to me about 5 times in one year - mainly on asok intersection. In my experience they are just looking for drugs to elicit a hefty bribe. They never took anything. Apparently 60K is the going bribe for a gram of the white stuff (wouldn't want to meet an incorruptible cop tho)

If you are gonna carry something dodgy, carry it in your sock. They never searched there, perhaps because feet are a bit of a no go in thai culture. And pray they don't one day turn up with sniffer dogs

As many as the number of accounts you need to make to post so much gold.

If you say so.

Wholesale beer costs the same or less in Bangkok than it does everywhere else in Thailand FWIW. If you are being charged 180 baht for a beer in Bangkok, it's because the bar you are at is putting 800% markup on it.

Feel free to drink at bars that charge 800% markup all you want, personally I don't enjoy being taken advantage of.

i like to pre drink at my place or with the guys before hand its like 30bhat a beer.

You can go to beer gardens and night markets were they do food and you get a pretty good price on towers of beer (1litre/3litre)

but in clubs its close to UK prices. Better value just to get a bottle of something for like 1.5k bhat between a few of you, then you can bring girls over too

I've never been to a bar in Thailand that charges 150 baht for a local beer.

It's possible to go out and drink at places that aren't gogo bars. Personally I find gogo bars pretty boring. I might go in there for 1 or 2 drinks but I would never stay in one for a whole night.

Like most people over 30, I prefer beer bars to nightclubs. I like conversation more than dancing and loud music.

And yes, most beer bars do have girls in them and still charge 50-60 baht for a beer.

Actually that's exactly what most tourists do. That's why there are 750,000 beer bars in Thailand.
