I don't think thats accurate as just about everyone driving uses gps maps in their vehicles. And I just used Google maps, including streetview, to look around different cities, punching in different points. All the listings come up, metro/bus/car distances info etc, as well as directions.
One thing I think is great here is that in most cites, most bus stops have an electronic video monitor, telling you how many minutes the bus is away from you, where it is currently located and all their route info.
