Thanks for the answer, even though this seems to be for short term stays in Korea. I'll look for more information about it!

For the phone, go to Yongsan station, and go to the mobile communications floor (top floor). Right when you get off escalator there is an SK telecom booth to the left that speaks English. They have badass prepaid phones/plans there.

You can get prepaid phones, but for 150k Won, you get a brand new Android smartphone. Then another 30k for sim card and first month data+phone+text. Then its 20k/month, and you can recharge phone at any convenient store. 10k for phone+txt(not sure how much exactly), then 10k for 450Mb of data

I went there solo, fresh off the boat, and had no problem getting setup with just passport + address.

nobody texts in korea. everybody uses kakaotalk. data is far more important than free text.

Yeah, I really don't need all the texts-phone calls things, since I use kakaotalk only when I'm in Korea

But that's good to know, thanks!

Cost of a flight or hotels might be up if you come around Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving.) It's a long holiday this year so.

currently accepting applications from people who would like to get ****faced with a socially inept white kid this weekend

two questions, will i need to get some sort of tourist visa to enter the country and what's the status on weed in seoul?

depends on which country but most countries no, you get a visa exeption. if youre american, you get a 90 day visa exeption before you have to leave the country. weed is 100 bucks per gram for the ****tiest weed you can imagine, and its really not worth the risk/time to look for some. koreans dont really mess with drugs and is not very socially accepting. if you want to be socially inept in korea, dont go around asking for weed or "medicine"

Korea getting tough on smoking JUST cigarettes!

This will be interesting to see how it turns out: (From http://www.busanhaps.com/article/kor...ing-ban-public)

Korea, for better or worse, has long been a smoker’s paradise. You can light up just about anywhere in the ROK with little worry of repercussion either legally or socially.

Well, those days (and nights) are soon coming to an end as the six-month grace period for the country’s strict new public smoking laws come into effect at the end of this month. And when we say “strict”, we mean strict.

Starting July 1, owners of restaurants, cafes and bars with ground space of more than 150 square meters will be hit with penalties of up to 5 million won (US$4,480) if their customers are found lighting up on the premises.

The first offense by businesses allowing customers to smoke will be 1.7 million won, the second 3.3 million and then the big 5 million won smack-down kicks in for the third.

The government has promised it will not take the law lightly and will begin routine crackdowns once the new regulations take effect, including regular patrols stopping into businesses establishments for a look and sniff of the atmosphere.

Not only are businesses being targeted with fines, but so are the smokers themselves. If caught smoking outside designated public smoking areas, those puffing up will be dinged with a 100,000 won ($89) fine for their nicotine fix.

A number of measures are being enacted to address health concerns:

- Several large Korean companies are using harsh tactics to decrease smoking amongst employees, going so far as to deny promotions to workers who fail a nicotine test.

- Along with making all air force bases off-limits to smoking, the South Korean Air Force has also declared it will not recruit Air Force Academy cadets to be pilots if they are smokers.

- Earlier this month, an Asiana Airlines employee was fired for smoking on the rooftop of one of the company's branch offices.

- In May, Health and Welfare Minister Chin Young vowed to convince legislators to pass a bill that would require that cigarette packages come with graphic imagery showing the detriments of smoking.

To anyone who is going to this about a year back there was a bunch of fraud done by Jeju taxi drives at the airport and few got arrested. Since I lived on Jeju for 5 years most of the places your going to from the Airport shouldn't be more than 10,000 Won even if they take the long way.
Story: A girl I know got into a taxi and fell asleep and the driver didn't wake her up but rather just circled her house for 30 extra mins to rake up the cost. Be a little careful.
Also, most of them speak little English so grab name cards, business cards to make life easy.
If you do think you go ripped of just take a picture of the taxi drivers name card and take to the police about it. Also, if the driver doesn't use the meter his trying to scam you. Best thing to do is a get a name card of the hotel your staying at and flash it to the driver.

Other advice: The drinks at the hotel bars are super expensive. Good places to drink are mostly in Shin Jeju city, New Jeju city. I really liked Modern times.
Good places to eat include Kal's buffet, Boss Taco, Zappata's, Vips has good buffet too. Outback wasn't great. Tons of great galbi places around. Do try the black pig.
IMO the stuff near the ocean and ocean drive isn't worth the extra money. You can find better places to eat near City hall, SheChong.
Good luck in the tourny but it kind of sucks it's during the rainy season.

It's a really nice place but the casino was dead most of the time. They had/have some crappy rules for BJ. Example: If you hit 21 but the house draws to it, they take your bet. I stopped playing their after that and went next door.
I left before poker came so I haven't been there since Feb. You're about 5 mins taxi ridefrom City hall and good places to eat. Go into the side streets and you get a ton of bars, resturants. Also, Han's Deli isn't a DELI. It's Korean fast food. Still good.
Emart, huge store, is 3 min walk next door. The restaurants are overpriced in that area and not really that great. It's better to go to Shechong, city hall. McDonalds is close too.
