For non-EU citizens the same rules as in UK should apply.

I've visited Germany several times and I must say that the big cities are nothing special in Europe's standards but the Alps are magnificent. Garmisch-Partenkirchen for example.

I have been living in Ireland for over 5 years and looking forward to move out. my boyfriend is Spanish and working in gambling company so we thought Gibraltar would be a good destination for a while. I am working as a restaurant manager but suppose in Gibraltar wouldn't be able to find similar job. What about customer service? I'm native polish, do u think i could get job in a betting companies? and how to start searching? looking forward to hear from you!!!!!!!

This week I was being approached by a recruiter for your company, and it does sound very tempting. Only problem is I purchased a house last year and that makes it complicated. Before I can even consider a step like this, I need a bit of good sense of what I earn vs what I have to spend (especially if you have double the costs in two countries.)
Just PM me. I'm the Team Manager for Pokerstrategy punto com.

I can confirm that you can live here as a EU citizen without a job and poker is legal by law and tax free.

Being native Polish, you can try to get a foot in the customer service area in Gibraltar. Ideally, you supply all the Gibraltar recruiting agencies with your CV.

Xantos, I am thinking of studying in Germany for a year beginning in October 2010.

People have said Berlin is an amazing place to live. Should I even consider other cities in Germany?

If Berlin, is it just a decision between the Freie and the Humbodlt? Can you by any chance shed any light on these two institutions? (which would be more fun etc?)

Also, is playing online poker as a foreigner living in Germany for a year going to be fine?

Hey there,

sorry for the late answer - didn't visit 2+2 for a few days.

Cities
Berlin, Hamburg & Munich are the three biggest cities & all are really nice & green.

Berlin: 3.3M, 'young', cheapest
Hamburg: 1.8M, lots of water + bridges etc.
Munich: 1.3M, probably most posh, but also most expensive

Another alternative would be the typical smaller university towns, e.g. Münster or Aachen in the West or Heidelberg, Augsburg etc. in the South.

Universities
Berlin: Humboldt is said to be better.
Hamburg: Okay university, but is not in the top rankings.
Munich: Both big Munich universities belong the the Top5 in Germany.

Technical Universities (e.g. mechanical engineering): LMU Munich or RWTH Aachen
Economics: Mannheim is said to be best, but Münster, Hamburg, Berlin, Munich are also decent.

Poker

De facto, no one will care.
Best you cash out with sth like your Neteller card, then not even a bank will notice. But as a foreign student, no one will really care even if you move 100k to your bank account, as it's credible that you brought it with you from your home country (rich parents or sth ).

if you remove the space between poker and strategy, this is a subforum about studiying in the biggest German poker forum. You will be able to write in English there, 95% of people will understand you & most will be especially eager to help ^^

As I have studied in Berlin in the 90s I think I might chime in with some more info:

I you want to have an amazing time in an exiting city that is unlike any other in Europe, definitely go to Berlin.

As to what uni to choose it depends what you want to study. If it's a technical subject TU Berlin is your choice. FU Berlin is located in Dahlem, a very nice (and expensive) part of the city but the nightlife is going on elsewhere. So for this reason alone, if your subject is non technical, I would suggest Humboldt which is located in Mitte, currently the coolest district in Berlin.

Be prepared though that all unis in Berlin are huge and pretty anonymous. Studying there is nothing like what you are probably used to in the US. There is a reason why the students in Berlin generally need the longest time to finish their studies, and it's not only because of the great nightlife.

I'm up for whichever uni would be the most fun for someone looking to pretty much drift through a course and have a great time. So anything that separates the universities based on quality of teaching or strengths in various subjects would not really contribute to my decision. However, student vibe and nightlife/social insights most definitely would!

Please expand on why studying in Berlin is nothing like in the U.S.?
(I'm from UK btw!)

If i was wanting to stay in Gibraltar for 2-4 weeks, what would be the cheapest way to stay there so I can also grind online?

@belfunk:
I think all of the property letters also do short-term lettings, so I think on a 2-4 weeks basis this should be cheaper than Hotel.

If you're just visiting, I think Spain would also be an option - the rents are 30-40% cheaper, so short-time letting should be as well.

Most important: prices are negotiable - make a first offfer maybe 30% below list price.
If you have trouble finding real estate agencies, drop me a PM.

Hi Xantos!

Ive been thinking about moving to Spain for a while now, but since it's taxation towards poker is still in grey area, Ive been starting to think about Gibraltar. And also my Spanish is close to zero so there I would not have this problem..
Since I have a little bit of family with me I would be interested to know about renting villas there.. I would assume that there isnt that many villas available for rent there since the place is pretty smallish?

I tried to google for agencies in Gibraltar but I only find flats basically..

And about that taxation on poker, is it official that if I become a resident there that all the poker winnings are tax free or just EU land based sites?

I have a question about Malaga not that much of topic since it is just some minutes from gibraltar.

Do you know if they offer NL holdem in Malaga or close to Malaga? If so, what stakes, rake and, level of players?

Thanks!

I'm almost certain you can live in gibraltar w.o having a real job (proving that you won't be a burden) but I'm looking for advice from a full-time poker player living in Gibraltar. I've just read this:

Where do I go to apply for a residency permit and what should I take with me?

A: Applications for residency can be made to the Immigration Department at New Mole House, Rosia Road (Tel: 00 350 71543) between the hours of 9:00am and 12:45pm.

The applicant must appear in person and should have available the following documents:

1) Certificate of Terms of Employment from the Employment and Training Board.

2) One passport photograph

3) Passport, identification card

4) Proof of present residence (availability of place to live) e.g. lease, rental, contract, electricity, rates and water bill.

5) £5.00 cash to pay application fee.
